Cyclocross - Lance Armstrong of CX?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Please forgive my ignorance, but I just saw a little of a cyclocross race, and I'd love to see more of the sport somehow. Is it ever on TV? Are CX racers dedicated to the sport, or are these road racers who do this in the off-season? And is there a Lance for cyclocross?

Sven Nys is the dominant force in cyclocross these days, but he's had bad luck in the World Championships.
Go to youtube and search for "superprestige". The Superprestige series is actually more competitive than the World Cup series, because the World Cup restricts the number of racers from any one country.
cyclingnews.com has really good CX coverage:

search youtube for "cyclocross"
and once you've watched your fill, give it a shot. it's even more fun to do than to watch.

Aside from his lack of luck in the world championships, I would say that Sven Nys is a far more dominant figure in his sport than Lance Armstrong was. Think more Tiger Woods. When he enters, he wins more often than not.

^^LOL What are teammates for? Or former teammates that is.
There are guys that actually use the road season as training for cross. Many people are more focused on cross these days. I am one of them.

You could argue that Lance focused solely on TdF, but you could equally argue that Nys competes in a small niche sport. Lance is a better comparison with Tiger because, like Tiger, he singlehandedly rescued an entire industry (i.e. road bike boom).

I see your point, but I don't think it's goofy. Nys says that his only goal is to win as many races in the season as he can. And he nearly has for the last three years. In contrast, Armstrong only concentrated on the TDF. If he happened to win another race during the year, it was "in preparation." He was always far too worried about the American market not understanding why he didn't win. As for niche sport argument, I would say all cyclists compete in a niche market. And for rescuing the industry, I don't think Belgian fans really care about the US market for road bikes. Bikes have always been popular there.
Just a few thoughts, not a vitriolic argument.
what about ryan trebone??
