I can ride my bike in the normal forward direction while sitting on the handle bars facing rearward. Would the "FaceThem" technique dictate that I then switch back to the right side of the road so I am still facing them? Safety first I say!

Everyone has the wrong-way-cyclist figured out..no one has much defense against a driver gone wrong. You can hear him coming up..and see him in your mirror but realistically most of the time you must focus on the immediate road ahead.
I will not accept the fact that you cyclists never ever feel there are certain circumstances where you may be better off looking at what's coming at you...does it never get dark or rain or fog or snow..you wouldn't ride home on a dark rainy night with your kids following would you?
Kind of a mute point about my kids, since you wouldn't catch them out riding their bikes on a dark rainy night in the first place ;), but I know what you are getting at. I have had some close calls from behind, I have taken measures to reduce them, but riding against traffic is not one of them. Since most motorists in my area are not generally expecting traffic to be on the wrong side of the road, the odds of me getting hit from behind are far less than being hit by a motorist pulling out/turning in front of me, especially when I'm clipping along at 25 to 30 mph in certain parts of my commute.

You claim to know a lot about what I must do.
Your father was an idiot and so are you. In addition to cycling, I also do quite a bit of running. I can't tell you how many times I've had to hop up on the curb or into the grass, because oncoming traffic don't usually give you the space because they figure you see them. How are you going to move to the left on a bike if you have no shoulder? I've had more close calls running against traffic then I have cycling with traffic.
Anyway if I'm going to get hit, I'd rather get hit from behind then to hit a car head on and go through the windshield.
BTW, you also suck as a troll. Come up with something good and try to change it up.
I pop out of my street onto a much busier street sticking the front end of my car well through where a cyclist would ride. However, as I approach this corner I am looking to my left to look for cars and mainly cyclist, only the quickest of glances to check for pedestrians. If a cyclist happens to be going the wrong way on that road, I would never see them. I would smack them right into the traffic lane. Wouldn't mean to, wouldn't like it, I would feel bad.
You know who would be at fault in the traffic report? The guy laying in the street swearing it's safer to ride on that side. Then I'd sue him for the damage to the front end of my car where all your bike paint and flesh were stuck to.
I can't believe in all my years of posting at BF i've never seen this guys posts before. Honestly, I think it's one of our hardcore VC advocates having a little fun with us.

If that is the case, I cannot prove it using the Wonder Woman powers Brian bestowed on me when I became a moderator.
No, he is just your hard core AC rider.

It's Ok dear, we like the outfit..it looks much better on you than it does on me. :D

I have to agree...I guess every ideology has its fringe elements. ;)

Defensive Riding..not riding 'against the traffic'..which means i only ride on the left side of the road IF NOTHINGS COMING..when along comes a jogger/bike/dumptruck off i go on the shoulder grass sidewalk, or switch to the right side if it's open or i stop and freeze if caught on something like a narrow bridge with nowhere to go..when danger passes..back i go facing the next life threatening obstacle..i'm a recreational mountain-biker in a relatively quite area.
I don't think you always say your kids will always be riding in ideal conditions.

This situation is one of my simplest dangers..this is where it's almost imperative to be a driver before you ride like me..what i do is go very slow or go up on the shoulder/grass/sidewalk and pass behind him so as not to affect his turn in the slightest possible way.
No driver is going to smack into me because i ride defensively..i couldn't care less if drivers spot me or not..i'm in complete control and it feels great.

If i'm caught in that situation..like crossing a narrow bridge..i'll stop and wait..riding defensively like i do i see just how dozy and inattentive drivers are..you may not realize it but even a small hit from behind will do severe damage to the spinal cord.
..you may not realize it but even a small hit from behind will do severe damage to the spinal cord.
Yea, and a small hit from the front will do severe damage to your face.
It is hard enough to get cagers to accept the bicycle as a serious form of transportation and that we have the right to use the road just like they do, but when you ride on the wrong side and dodge off the road every time a car comes toward you it they think every cyclist is supposed to yield to them. There are enough people out there that believe roads are just for cars and anything else is just trespassing. You're just making it worse.
I for one, am going to take my right to use the road and cars be damned. When I get to point that I'm afraid of getting hit, then I'll sell my bike and buy a Tank to ride around in.
BTW, I apologize for calling your father an idiot. That was uncalled for.

How about the other car that makes a fast left turn into that street at the same time and smokes you as you pop out from behind the first car?
Would you see that car every time? Are you sure? Or is dealing with two cars at once an unlikely scenario is your parts?
Ghettocruiser....don't do it man, don't look into his eyes!!!!
don't look into his eyes!!!!
If he rides the way he says, next time I drive through his 'hood, I may have to. :D
Head down, helmet on ... play chicken.
When I'm riding my trike and wrong-way riders come my way, I cover my face with my hands so I can't see anything at all and let them decide what to do. That forces them into traffic where they can learn their lesson.
Hey guys, anyone else notice the FaceThem has accomplished something no else has ever managed to do?
He actually has all the rest of us agreeing on something.

Yes. The best way to defeat a troll...other than ignoring him. :D

I was telling my daughter about this forum and she laughed when i told her i was being called a 'troll'. It seems to be the common remark of those who do not want to think about solutions to the deadly dangers of cycling in this day and age. Educate ALL the DRIVERS is the common thinking here..that is such a joke..it is never ever going to happen. Just 2 days ago my daughters best friends dad was cycling when he was hit from behind by a car who didn't see him. His helmet was smashed to pieces which may have saved his life or at least prevented serious head injury but his leg required extensive surgery. Or that poor guy a few days ago in Alberta? who was riding on the SHOULDER in the wee hours and was killed when hit from behind..by a drunk most likely. It's pretty easy to educate yourself to all the dangers and ride defensively but you'd have to be pretty naive to think all passing motorist are attentive and intelligent and will always see you and use good judgment.
A network of bike paths has got to be created..like in the Netherlands..and i know of one way to help make that happen..pick an important and very busy narrow 2 lane highway..wait for rush hour..and have a steady stream of volunteer cyclists nicely spread out..some going north some south that would quickly cause grid lock due to cars too afraid to pass..especially if some of those cyclist appeared to be inexperienced women pulling bicycle trailer strollers with dummy kids inside or rear child carries with fake toddlers in them..do that every friday for a few months and some action might take place..you could even include your own 'timid' car drivers afraid to pass involved in the scheme..only problem is it would be risky for the volunteers.
