Foo - Looking for a paper shredder. Need help.

Ok, I have a budget of ~$50-70 seeing how cheap shredders tend to die off quickly I thought I'd go up a step in the selection.

I'm in Canada so my preferred locations to buy are :

Wallys ( Walmart)

Home Depot (I don't think they sell those things here but I've not really checked as I know they sell toasters and such so who knows..)

Right now I'm looking at Business Depot's selection (http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/cat_i_results.asp?txtSearch=shredder) as they're close to me.

I would like to know is it worth it to buy the extended warranty on these units? My previous unit I think lasted two years. I don't know the warranty time on the unit and it costed something like $50 with taxes I think so I'm not sure if it's even worth getting it repaired. The motor just stopped working. My thinking is if I get some extended warranty then I can just shred away in bulk without worry if I burn out the motor and such then I can return it for the warranty work at the store. I would consider my last unit a light duty unit. I'm thinking more med-duty now. I do shred a couple items each day like envelopes, paper, and such but when I'm really cleaning the place out I can often have about 1/2 inch of paper I need to shred at a time. I also own a composter so mixing 1/4 into the compost, 1/2 into the kitchen garbage bin bag (to soak up any leaks in the bag before putting it into the green bin, and throwing out the other 1/4 I figure from a security stand point it's quite spread out and mixed up that it'll be damn hard to find info off the documents and also making good compost for my veggie garden as well.

I broke every shredder I had till I got a Royal 150MX. It's a real workhorse and can take
a lot of abuse. It will crosscut 15 pages at a time, and credit cards and CDs too. Its more
than your budget, but if you get one that breaks you'll end up spending more that that
anyway.

A puppy will do a more effective job than any of those models.

I was in the same boat a couple years ago. Had a troublesome cheap shredder and figured I'd cough up the money for a "good one". After a lot of research, I ended up with the Fellowes Powershred® P70CM (http://www.fellowes.com/Fellowes/site/products/ProductDetails.aspx?Id=34360). I bailed on the idea of an industrial duty unit, and just went for the best bang for the buck at the time, using sale price, coupons and/ or rebates. It's been trouble free for two years of daily use. There were several other Fellowes I would have purchased, but they were too tall for the spot we put it in.

You read my mind. You read my mind. :D I was thinking of more BBQ's or get a worm composter for winter use. Howver my shredded paper waste is ~1 garbage bag size full.I think my last shredder was ~4-5L capacity in the bin and I needed to clear the ibn every other day.

I rescued a Shredmaster Guardian Cross-Cut shredder out of the trash, cleared the bits of credit card that was jammed inside and have been using it without problem for about six years. Tho' it does tend to shut off on overheat when shredding more than a dozen or so pages.

This shredder is very effective. Once the paper has gone through it, no one will be able to recover the data. Best part is they also help keep your grass short when not shredding papers so it is kind of an all in one unit.
