What was your best concert ever?
I want to hear from the older and the younger.
My favorite was Big Head Todd in 94 or 95 at the State Theater in Kalamazoo. A band I had never heard of opened up for them - Dave Matthews.

two actually....Ike and Tina Turner, also at the State Theater in Kalamazoo,1971
Sha Na Na at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center Saratoga N.Y. 1976
Talking Heads at SUNY@Buffalo on the Speaking in Tongues tour. David Byrne came out with a boom-box and guitar and played psycho killer and then the band grew by one member a song until they were all out there. The Clash (-Jones) were excellent too. Wish I would have seen them with Mick Jones in the lineup.

Red Hot Chili Peppers. New Years time frame 1987. Small club in Vancouver called Graceland. Original line up. No MTV baggy pant losers there then. A crowd that actually knew the band before they got way popular. RIP Hillel.
Another RHCP at the Gorge in Washington. Some little band called the Foo Fighters opened up. Heard of them???
Soundgardens last concert in Seattle. Presidents of the United States of America opened.
Many punk shows in the 80's in Seattle. Dr. Know always put on a good show. Charged GBH, 7 seconds.
Smaller venues were always my favorites.
Ah crap. flashbacks hitting me now. Must grab IPOD.

i was at srv's show the night he died. while he was amazing, few people talk about clapton that night. i was really floored by that show.
dream theater last month was amazing.
the first monsters of rock tour (in the u.s.) was awesome. people talk about metallica and vh, etc. however, the scorps were friggin amazing.
one of the best guitar solos i've ever seen live was steve morse with deep purple.....it was the falling into infinity tour for dream theater.

I haven't been to too many concerts in my day, unfortunately, but a year ago i saw Deathcab For Cutie in the orpheum theater in Madison.
While i do like deathcab, i was hesitant to even go, not exactly what i pictured as a "concert" band, alas the venue made it worth while, no matter where you're at you're right on the stage and despite their girly music, when live they kinda know how to rock, and the band that opened for them was pretty good...can't think of their name right now, some british band.
That said, i saw metallica when i was in 7th grade...that was pretty fun :)

White Zombie - Backroom Austin, Tx Jan. '93
Union Underground - Backroom Austin, Tx Aug. '00 (some little band called Linkin Park opened for them before their first album came out)

Gilby Clark(ex-GnR guitarist) - Sneakers San Antonio, Tx Dec. '95
KoRn - Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre San Antonio, Tx Nov. '02

I have been to lots of shows but these stick out in my mind for various reasons.

This one is easy. 1983 US Festival - which happened to be the weekend I graduated college.

Tie between Bowie outside Chicago (I think 1989, supposed to be last tour with old hits) and Elvis Costello in Wisconsin (? 1990).
I'm not counting the dozens of blues clubs I went to in Chicago in the late 80's / early 90's - those were awesome.

yer kidding....right ?!?!?!?!?!?

That woulda been pre-syd / Glen M. PisT0Ls !
The PiSt0Ls were a life changing epiphony for me !
Im a piSt0Ls historian in retrospect.....if I ever meet you in
person you are going to have to give me all the sordid, gruesome
details !!!!! Music started and ended with them. Period.
Nothing else mattered or ever will !! Oi Oi Oi Oi ~ :D
That being said, Ive seen so many concerts its hard to say....
The Clash first time in USA at Univ. Pa skating rink...
The 'Stones in the 70's....
Keef Richards Expensive Winos in '89.....
NightHawks in '80....
The Ramones always put on a suuuuuper hi-energy, great show as did
the most awsome femalian of all time, Joan Jett....
The WORST :
#1 no question....The Grateful Dead in Philly, '79. I thought it would never
end. Rusty fork impaling genitals would have been less painful.
Kinks, the Tower '80...WTF were they thinking ?!?!?!? Drunk and 500dbs
of out-of-tune noize
The Professionals....East Side Club '80. See above only less inspired. Yawn.
Oh well.....music, I could go on for ever but Ill mercifully end it here :D
Too young to see any great punk rock but I saw The Police at a dive called Merlins in I think 1979. I knew the club owner's son. Met the boys backstage. I had a fake ID in 1982 to see U2 in another dive called Headliners. Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown also played a dump in the early 80s, I can't recall the name but I should have a playbill somewhere. Frank Zappa in 1983 was great, he didn't mind playing some of the older stuff.
Smaller venues are the best.

Kinks, the Tower '80...
Lol. I saw them that year at Stabler Arena in Bethlehem. I enjoyed the show, except for the part where someone in the crowd very nearly started a fight with the lead singer of the opening act.
A funny story about that night was that my (future)Father-in-law and mother-in-law, caught a ride on the opening act's tour bus and drank Foster's with them. The band was INXS, at that time, an unknown.

Best and worst on the same night.
The greatest concert I saw was KISS in 2004 in Brisvagas. They had 12 members of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra with them.
The same night opened with Machine Gun Fellatio. They were sh1thouse.
Many years ago I also saw Prince in concert.....amazing.

The absolute best was a band called 45th Parallel which is a group of unknown old guys who do tribute song shows. Second best was Twisted Sister. And as stupid as it sounds, Weird Al is the third best. He really goes all out.
Santana, 1996 Olympics Centennial Park after the bombing. Half a million people moving as one.
The Beatles 1964 Indiana State Fair
Just because I was there
Jimi Hendrix 1969 Indiana Fairgrounds Coliseum
We knew the worm had turned.
The Dixie Dregs 1993 The Vogue
They were almost an hour late, after the first song no one cared.
Yes.
Fragile Tour.
March 1972.
Shippensburg, PA
Crazy Horse opened for them.
It may have been something I ate that made it so memorable, though. ;-)
That was the best I remember, but there are lots more.

Wilco opening for the Jayhawks 1995 - Neither a hardrocking band, but well-crafted song that make the ladies cry. :)
Stereolab opened for Sonic Youth 2001- Unknown at the time this was the last chance to see Stereolab with Mary Hansen. Not the same band w/o her. :( Sonic Youth is a great band.
Lollapallooza 1994 - Nirvana was supposed to headline, but for obvious reasons did not. Smashing Pumpkins headlined instead. The concert seemed to be a vigil for Kurt Cobain.
Pat Metheny came into the bar where I was a keep. The weekly jazz quartet was playing, the place was dead, and he joined in just for the hell of it. Played for a good hour--hour and a half. I and the 15 others there that night were privileged to what amounted to a private jam session. Awesome.

Sarah Blasko in 2005. That woman has an amazing voice. I got to meet her after the show, she came across as a really nice and genuine person. Perhaps I should have asked her to marry me. ;)
I also really enjoyed the Screaming Jets in 2001. Apart from being great performers and better song writers than they were ever given credit for, they had quite a back-catalogue by that stage (and played for three hours). The previous 10 years had been a real period of change in my life, during which their music had been the one constant. It was quite an experience to hear all those songs played together.
i don't remember the year, but i got to see Johnny Cash with June Carter Cash and the Carter Family back in the 80's.
Charlie Daniels with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra was cool.
Jimmy Buffett always does a good show.
as does Elton John.
and KISS was good - i got to see them during one of the periods when the original foursome were back together.
i've seen Parliament Funkadelic several times, and never paid for a ticket - so those have always been great shows.
there's going to be a concert here on Oct. 13th, and i'm thinking about going - Survivor, A Flock Of Seagulls, The Romantics, Cutting Crew, Naked Eyes and Tommy Tutone... all in one night.

Tina Turner, at Oostend, Belgium, open-air, 1987, with opening act (then-unknown) Terrance Trent d'Arby.
Bruce Springsteen, Jan '85. (slept out in December on a sidewalk for tickets to that one!)
David Bowie, at the Scope in Norfolk, VA, Sept. '83. (drove there, saw the concert, and drove back to CLT that night)
There were others, but never like these three....

Favorite is a tie between two bands that to be honest, are not my favorite bands at all. Both I got "talked in to" going, and the "show" was awesome.
Fave:
Tie between Gloria Estefan (coming out of the dark tour) and Garth Brooks
A few other awesome concerts that must be mentioned:
David Bowie (early 90s, "farewell tour" before he started with Tin Machine)
Basia/Spyro Gyra
Dead Milkmen (my 1st mosh pit experiment)
Ramsey Lewis
Ratt with this band nobody had ever heard of opening up for them. I heard more than one person say as they were leaving the concert, "F*** Ratt, who the hell is this Bon Jovi band?". This was around 1985 a few years before they'd hit it big.

2002 - Wayne Shorter Quartet at Penn State
1992 - U2 (with the Pixies opening) in Minneapolis
1999 - Willie Nelson at some park in Bryan TX
Some of the best:
Sigur Ros in Toronto, 2001 -- it was at some old boathouse by the lake. Simply amazing. They brought in an Icelandic tenor to sing some songs... I can't describe it really. It was a strangely personal concert -- magical.
...And you will know us by the trail of dead, Toronto, 2001, Lee's Palace -- They rocked. Went completely nuts, and I was right up by the stage. Left the concert feeling like I'd been in a bar fight. Awesome :D
Kraftwerk, Toronto, 2004, Ricoh Coliseum -- Completely changed my impression of Kraftwerk's music. Their live album from this tour (Minimum-Maximum) is great.
Boredoms, Toronto, 2007, The Phoenix -- They had four drummers and a vertically mounted "xylophone" made of electric guitars that the totally crazy lead singer attacked with giant mallets. 'Nuff said :D
Björk, Toronto, Centre Island, 2004 -- Outdoor summer concert. Everything I hoped it would be.
The Hidden Cameras, Toronto, 2004 -- The concert ended with the audience dancing with the band on stage. Great fun.
Worst:
Autechre, Toronto, 2001, the Opera House -- Just awful. There were two opening acts, the second of which was some guy with a laptop looking totally bored and making the most godawful screaming/grinding noises for a good hour. Then Autechre came on, also looking bored. The acoustics were terrible, and the sound was completely distorted. People were trying to dance to the music, which, if you know Autechre, can be difficult. It was like large sections of the audience were having seizures. I left early.
