Anyone have pictures of this? im thinking about doing it because i want a new saddle, but i also might get a new bike in the spring so i would want the honey saddle, but i dont know if a black bike with all chrome parts would look weird with a honey saddle.

anyone have pictures or running this?

This picture is from several years ago, before fixed gears became really popular....:D
I didn't care much for the honey saddle though....so I eventually dyed it a dark brown.

Not weird, just old timey. I think honey with black components is the only fashion faux pas that you want to avoid.

Bear in mind that over time a honey saddle will tend to darken; I've posted pictures of my honey Brooks Pro which has darkened considerably since I bought it 2 years ago (search on "honey" and "Wil Davis" if you want to see the pics). At the moment the saddle is on my Schwinn Super Sport which is "Smokey Pearl" (colour).

Right, here's my honey Brooks, which has turned brown from proofiding:

At one point the bar tape would basically have matched.

just curious (anyone w/ a brooks can answer this), how long did it take your saddle to get that dark brown? I just got a new saddle, haven't ridden it, and have applied 2 light coats of proofide, though it is not nearly that dark yet. should i put on more, or does it get browner w/ more riding and over time?

also, how much proofide is too much?

Not long at all, under a day in fact. But I hit it hard with proofide. I used the August sun to melt proofide in the lid of the tin while heating the saddle itself. In that state the saddle soaked up the liquid proofide amazingly fast and I managed to put in quite a lot in a short time. In retrospect and in answer to your second question, *that* was probably too much proofide. The saddle broke in very fast and lost tension, so now it has to be tied. Tied though it's very comfortable and holding its shape well.

I wouldn't proofide your saddle too much more than it is now. 1 or 2 more coats plus periodic touch ups ought to do it IMO.

That's a great looking bike, mander. I like to see another forum-member with panniers on his SS ride. I've got the same fenders, too. What frame is that?

...and I did the same thing with my Brooks, when it arrived-- it was in July, and the heat had liquified all the proofide in the shipping box. Total mess, and I ended up soaking the saddle with it. I've gotten a little stretch, and I think I'll be adding some laces, soon...does make for a nice color, however.

To the OP-- I think a honey Brooks with black frame looks dynamite, as long as your bar tape is close to the saddle color.
