Touring - sun rhyno wheels

hi all,
any thoughts on this wheel build,
36hole sun rhyno rims, on shimano xt hubs,, dt swiss plain gauge spokes,.
should i buy ,,or is there a better option i can go with.

Should be good, but heavy. Depends on your intended use.

Rynos or ryno lites? Rynos do not have eyelets, I think. Both these wheels will be bomb proof but heavy and wide. Depends on what you are using them for.

Rhinos do have eyelets and are usually seen as a tough touring rim. I have seen some reports that they do tend to wear quickly but have no experience of this.

I rode on both Rynos and Ryno lites for thousands of kilometers (the Rynos I rode did not have eyelets older model?). Very tough rim and relativley inexpensive, but as I said above can be too wide for some touring and are heavy.

I use a similar configuration -- Rhyno lite rims and xt level hubs (Shimano tandem hubs). Rims are good, and xt hubs solid too, but even lower level hubs will work fine.

As stated above Ryhnos make for a bombproof but heavy wheel. And I think there may be some truth in the rumour that Rhynos wear quickly. Ours wore done to the wear indicators in about 2000km during a very wet trip across Europe. We just ignored the wear indicators and the wheels did another 4,500km on very rough roads, carrying a full load, without any problems and are still going strong.

Rhynos are built to last. They have followed me across much of Central Asia, China and Southeast Asia with no problems. In fact, I hardly worry about tentioning the spokes as the wheels rarely become out of true, no matter the conditions of the road or load.
As for wear, I only run Kool Stop brake pads as they are less abrasive than XTR. Even if you are cycling through rain for weeks on end and over dirt roads. But the rims have lasted for over 18,000kms and are still going strong.

I ended up going with Rhyno's Mammoth rims, xt hubs, brass nipples and straight guage spokes. And yes they are heavy but breaking a spoke is a non issue. and that is important to me when touring in remote areas. On a similar tour I ran into three people who had cracked Mavic rims despite their strong reputation.

bit slow getting back however,im not sure if i should go
for these wheels now ,the weight is a big factor
no point in killing myself pushing heavy wheels,
no matter how good there are ..
most of my rideing will be on tarmac roads ,
but i would like to think i could go off road as well,,

so basically im looking for your thoughts on a good( great) set of wheels size600

Sun rims aren't round btw, hard to build an even tensioned wheel that is true/round with them. I did the ryno's for a BMX cruiser and CR18's on my LHT, and will not use them again. The LHT will probably get Mavic or Velocity hoops as I'm not quite satisfied with the Sun's. Other than having to spend extra time getting them as round/true as I could, they're an ok rim, and they were half the cost of the Mavics.
