Southern California - B2B Ride - Reports and Pix

Typical of my rides...we had a hike a bike and people lost...
May need to rename to the "How Many People Can We Lose ride"

Great to see Indolent, mtblurkr,greggk, and Maria from OCRR..dang girl you are fast...Nacy, Cole, Drew, and everyone else who made it...we had some new comers to this ride from Hemet...and some other friends of mine...

A big shout out and thanks to Cole who graciously provided cold drinks, snacks, bananas at Seal Beach and wouldn't take any $$...you are totally awesome!! Thanks

Overall a great day for this ride...it did get a bit warm on the way back north of the 10 frwy...but wasnt too terribly hot...well it did hit Gina, but she was hammering the whole day...so...she did great...
I actually never got dropped and was able to hang onto Mr and Mrs B the whole day...
Thanks for pulling the train all day Mr B...your pace is smooth and awesome!!

I did cramp at the top of the dam, managed to spin it out to get back...but still managed to set a pb for avg speed over the 72 miles!

How do you lose people on SGRT? That still is somewhat mind-boggling. Besides that one part where you cross over to the other side of the path, Four Corners, and Arrow Hwy, it's gotta be the most foolproof route ever - but obviously not . . .

They fall back and somehow get lost...and of course..the poor girl didnt have a cell phone...but she was retrieved on Arrow Hywy by the dam...
I guess we should be asking if everyone has a cell phone with them....

4 miles from the beach...there was a big cleanup going on...great to see all these boy scouts and others cleaning the shoreline...but it made for a very dangerous ride as they kept walking into the path...and forcing oncoming riders into middle...some very close calls and 1 fall..(gregg - who is ok...thank goodness)

Also there was a childrens bike ride the we saw heading north....not too much problem there...a walkathon...on the streets in Seal Beach...
And tons of riders as we went south..probably more than I have seen in a while there...

You speed demons looked like you guys were on your way to a good ride... Wish I was able to tag along..

Yeah thanx Herbie for organizing the ride. Was a nice pace and though I hated to lose some riders, everyone was a class act! I don't think I've ever been involved in a group that managed to stay together for so long. Gina did struggle when we got to. She says the heat but I think the climb!:D...It was real classy of you guys to wait for us at the top. Gave us a chance to recoup for the rest of the return. You did great Herb, hung tough even with the cramp. Even with my few cheat cheat pushes, Gina wasn't able to catch you at the end! Put one down for Herb!:p

We headed over to the Green Onion for some Hispanic food. Greg, Ed, Gene, Gina and I had some good laughs! As we were heading out, I saw your girls pulling up to the lot.:)

Great ride Herb man. Even if you guys won't have lunch with me, Drew and I had a great lunch at the Rivers End before I headed back. The requisite in route meal.:D The hike-a-bike wasn't nearly as long this time, but still got everything all dusty.:mad:

Luwin, for some reason people seem to miss the turn at the bridge to cross over Coyote Creek back to the main SG trail. Then, for whatever reason, the climb up the dam seems to be out of site, out of mind. But all wasn't lost. As Maria's friend was zipping down Arrow Hwy. past the entrance to the dam, we happened to see her go by and Maria chased her down. So I guess everyone was recovered in tact.

Nice meeting Greg, Maria, and Maria's friend. Nacy, Drew, Cole and their new acquaintance made good time from Seal Beach this morning as well. Good going guys.

Man, I go check it out on Wednesday and it was looking alright - then between then and Saturday they rip out a section of the bike trail. Sorry you guys had to hike - but it wouldn't be a "true" Herbie ride if there wasn't some dirt involved!!! :p

Thanks Herb for organizing this lovely ride. It was another wonderful day in Southern California -----great ride and great company, and wonderful food and drinks in Seal Beach (thanks Cole).
Unfortunately there had to be some drama involved: my friend Patty got lost on the way back to the Park (apparently there is a spot on SGBT where it can easily happen), luckily she found her way back with very little trouble (and tiny bit of stress) thanks to her ability to charm some local car mechanics who kindly let her use Internet and advised her on the directions to the beloved Encanto Park.

Patty said she'd go biking with us again and I promised to be more diligent in keeping an eye on her and never ever again advice her not to bring her cell phone when going biking.

So what happened to Tom? Didn't see him at the end. He had mentioned that this was his longest ride. He stopped with us at the last park break then decided to continue on alone. He was hanging in there and doing great the entire time. I'm surprised he dropped out of the group cause he was doing so well, but never did see him at the end.:eek:

True, I know when Gina gets hot, she just can't go any further. He had metnioned earlier that his pb was about 50 miles, Now it's about 70. That's a good thing!:D

I rode with Linda, Debbie and Julia back from the park, then overheated at the end and had to stop at the bottom of the dam. Nevertheless it was my longest ride, and I hung with you guys a lot longer than I thought I would. I'm wearing my star with pride. Thanks for leading the whole way!

Yup...Tom sure did great....

Maybe instead of those benches they are installing, they should have an a/c'd room or misting system for riders when they reach the bottom of the dam....sure would help make the rest of the ride easier!!
