The guys here at the station extend their sympathy to the rider's family and friends. We're bummed too. There was nothing we could do.

He had no ID with him.
Here is the quote from cbs
Sandy Nelson Julienne of Huntington Beach had been on a bicycle riding northbound on Culver Drive near University Drive at 10:04 a.m. when he was hit by a semi hauling construction debris, said Lt. Rick Handfield of the Irvine Police Department.
As the driver of the large truck passed Julienne in the bike lane, the wheels of the second trailer apparently hit the bicyclist, Handfield said.
Julienne died at the scene.
The driver of the truck was interviewed by detectives and later released, he said.
Anyone with information about the collision can call Detective Johnathan Cherney at (949) 724-7024.

This is terrible, my thoughts are with his Familyand Freinds......
Irvine is usualy one of the safe Cities to Ride (relatively speaking) but there's always a chance wherever we ride....
It must have been very upsetting for you Bill....I think it's really time we all give a big thank you to you and your Buddies for the magnificent job you do, I for one realy appreciate it!!

According to those riding with him, the truck was about 8" into the bike lane. Sandy was riding next to the truck, and fell right under the wheels. There will be a memorial ride a week from next Saturday at Food Park. It is unclear why he chose not to scoot over to the right of the bike lane, but one thing is clear, give yourself plenty of room when riding near big rigs. Very sad, my thoughts go to his family and the OC cycling community.

Wow. That's practically next to my house. Sad...and scary.
I saw the investigation scene during my ride that day. At first, I didn't really know what was going on with the closed roads, but the ambulance, police, and a handful of riders spoke for itself. It was a really sad sight to see.

What an awful way to go. I feel for the family/friends of the rider. I've ridden that road dozens of times.
Beware of the second trailer! The big truck passes and you think it's gone, then the trailer is suddenly there and scares you (or takes you out). Some of you may not have that problem because I don't think double trailers are legal in every state.
There will be a memorial ride a week from next Saturday at Food Park.
Please keep us posted on that ride!
A sad day for the cyclists in the community, my thoughts go out to his family.

Hi OC Roadie,
Do you have any information on the memorial ride a week from next Saturday at Food Park?? Also, is the date 9/29/2007? I know that the family and friends would like to attend or at least meet some people. Maybe at the beginning or end of your ride (not sure how you all have it organized, I'm not familiar with these bike rides). Another option may be at the site.
Anyway....any information you have on this ride would really be appreciated.
Thanks so much!

Hi everyone,
I'm very happy so many people noticed and appreciated my uncle he was my buddy more than anything and also my favorite person. The memories are plenty and will keep me going but, our loss is great. You can't be expected to get along with everyone but we sure do try, a comman bond we shared."We love people" He was a lot of fun to be around as a kid, he was always the same when he showed up, always ready to joke around and play. He could be hiding behind a door, and you knew he was there but he would still scare the heck out of you, bust out with a laugh followed by a hug. One thing he like to say was "April fools day after". Classic!
He was as strong as he looked, you'd know that if you shook his hand "Ouch". He was also as gentle his voice. Unique in that, he had no restrictions... He did what he wanted when he wanted. He had a job not to long ago, he was with the company for at least a year (good pay) His boss told him that he would have to take out his earring. He said "Ok thank's and without a clinch, quit and a found another job, where he was very happy. My Uncle Sandy liked; Riding anywhere, reading, family, coffee, beer (pref. Guinness), darts, cute toes, sundresses in spring, and cute blonds with "furry thighs" hey those are his words. He was cool real cool!
I'm glad he was in love when he passed. For a few years we would go out every weekend looking for "love" but mostly fun we always ended up with a great story. One spot we use to hang out at is a bar in H.B "PERQS", I went years later with a friend, and met Annie b who I fell in love with soon after...When I told Uncle Sandy about her he ask does she have friends, I said "I don't know" But, she did and she was blond and cute, Susan b was the best thing that happened to him. They had very happy times, he loved her a lot. We shared a lot of stories and I know how really happy he was. Thank you! To everyone for your thoughts and prayers our family is so thankful. We heard there will be a ride this saturday at the Food park, if anyone has any information please let us know E-mail "thefrogtree yahoo com" or post...
I Love you Uncle Sandy (:
