I have SRAM 7 speed grip shifters on my mtb. The right shifter recently broke on me. Can I use an 8 or 9 speed grip shifter to control my 7 speed derailleur?
You could maybe get away with it with 8 I would not reccomend it with 9 it would largely depend on the der.

Surely its best to use anoter 7spd one? because thats what it came with?
Of course it is. However that is not the question that was asked.

ya i dont see why not. my friend runs a 9 speed shifter on an 8 speed system. he cusses like a sailor though cuz its really bad
Your friend cusses like that because the spacing on 9 speed is different than eight. he needs to decide which number of gears he wants to run then do that.

I tried a 7spd shifter on an 8spd cassette for a couple of weeks whilst I got a new shifter and whilst the spacing is perfect on a couple of gear combinations it's out on others.

7 speed shifters would be better, but 8 speed will definately work. I wouldn't suggest 9spd though.
Seven and Eight speed cogsets have the same spacing, and an eight speed shifter will work fine with a seven speed cogset. No problems, at all, if you set the derailleur cable tension correctly --exactly as you would do with a seven speed shifter. You will have one "null" click, and you can either "limit out" #1 by use of the derailleur stops, or you can do it to #8. I reccomend doing it to number 8 if you're not using "Rapid Rise".
