The camera was set to marco, and I didn't realise that until I got back, so everything is blurry. But it was fun.

You seriously need some more crap on your handlebars. Some headlights, a bell or two, a GPS unit... Sky's the limit.

Cool. You know there are a lot of people in certain forums who insist that SoCal drivers are perfectly wonderful to people on bikes, and it's just the people on bikes who don't know how to drive in traffic. It would be most interesting to see some of your footage in that context.

Lots of people in the Commuting forum have handlebar- and helmet-mounted video. It's interesting to watch sometimes, and can be easier than explaining a complex situation. I believe they tend to use much smaller cameras, though.

I love watching bike cams. Somebody should put together a montage video of them for use with the trainer in winter. Or maybe it already exists?

Considering most of the ones posted online are of people being hit by cars, near misses of same, or the rider getting knocked on their ass by their own dumbassedry or an external force, it'd make for a rather jarring, frightening trainer ride.

But, imagine having one that was a continuous feed of a ride through Moab, or a stage of the Tour de France. I think this is such a good idea that it must have been done. Even commuting across Manhattan would be cool. Maybe it would be better for training if it wasn't artsy editing montage, just exactly the view from the rider's perspective.

Maybe they could bring in a star or sexy locale, like "A Night Spin in Paris."

Hmmm.... using an aero bar, eh? Wish I'd thought of that - I have a couple laying about. I did the lazy man's way - I went to Best Buy and bought a little twisty-legged table tripod for $20, and wrapped it around my handlebar.

Now, if you could adjust the speed of the video based on how fast you were riding, you'd have something there.

Problem would be, if you used regular framerate video, you'd either be watching a slideshow at low speeds, or Benny Hill Rides The Tour at high speeds.

It's not how fast you spin, it's how fast you're spinning in your imagination. I mean, when I'm shooting buckets, I'm dunking over Shaquille in my mind. The videos would be wish fulfillment.

Though, a ride with Monty Python might be kinda cool...

I think some pleasing-to-look-at videos would be nice for trainer riding, and in general. A long time ago, my parents had a VHS tape (kids, ask your parents) that featured stunning footage of flying through the Grand Canyon, set to music by Tangerine Dream. I'd love to see more things like that. Nice footage set to good music.

Preferably on DVD, though.

Is that camera a reel to reel or what? Sure sounds like one.

I bought a digital compact with video capability a few weeks ago. It can record 640x480 @ 30 fps for around 80 minutes (but limited to ~45 minutes per file due to file size limits). My commute to uni is 17-18 minutes. I'll see if I can make some sort of mount for the camera and record the ride there.
