Thats a cool contest. I've got a Free Spirit Brittany that's just begging to be done, but I doubt that I have the time.

I really like how the Frank N Stine is coming. I can't wait to see it.

Hey East Hill, you know what would make a great ratrod bike? PastorBob's safety bike! If he could make it rideable it would be a cinch to win! :)

No doubt! That's one cool bike he's got there, but I think he has other plans for it :p . Pastor Bob does seem as if he'd enjoy ratrods, though, doesn't he? Perhaps we should encourage him?

There's a lot of nice bikes in the contest already...

No kidding, some of the bikes in the original build off were amazing. I have one cool little thing planned, but other than that it's not gonna be anything too terribly special. I have a feeling yours will be pretty amazing judging by your other bikes...

Even better, build a bike!

I sure wish I had the skills to do so. One of my eternal regrets is that I never had exposure to metal shop when I was younger, because I think I would have been pretty good. I have to admit though, that I am a very detail oriented person (my job demands that I be virtually perfect), but I don't have a lot of imagination for something like bike building. I think I'm going to have to correct that lack of welding skills in the next few years...

But I sure do know how to appreciate a nice design, because even if the welding isn't perfect, the fun in building the bike comes through. And that's the whole and entire point :p .

WTP, Fast Eddie, basscadetz, kemmer, and the rest of you who post here on a regular basis make it hard for me to decide who's the best!

So I just enjoy them all :D .

i dont weld, never have, dont have a welder either! but it is on my "when the kids get older" list! just gotta be creative w/ what ya got, thats part of the fun!!! one thing though, is the more bikes i take apart and the more areas i venture into the more money on bike tools i gotta spend! in fact this weekend im goin to the LBS to order another free wheel tool, and i just bought a 20 dollar wrench!!! one of my workshop projects is to set a pole in the ground to put my old school manual tube bender on so i can get some stuff bent w/out a trip to a machine shop or running over it w/ my car!!! there is alot involved in just restoring or rebuilding a bike, even if theres no custom stuff or modifications, there is still alot of time involved that any hobbyist like me can appreciate, and it takes alot of time to be a good painter w/ rattle cans (i still dont have it down) so i say go for it and build your own!!!!! own it!!!! thanx for the compliments by the way, fast eddie outty

That's good to know Fast Eddie! There's hope for me yet, in other words.

I've got a lot of the tools I need for tinkering with the bikes (my husband's a great guy, got me what I needed for Christmas last year)...I even have a bike or two that could be...made over.

Time to do some research.

hey kemmer, if you're having fun, that's all that matters. Polish is nice, nice paint is nice, but a great bike looks good no matter what :D .

I'm a bum!

No good excuses, just that I seem to get out and ride more than I stay home :p . But since you are encouraging me, it sounds as if I will have to come up with a winter project, eh?

I'm going to talk my wife into cleaning up the Schwinn Hollywood I dumpstered for her as a build off bike. I'm thinkin a wash and wax, new tires, new grips, a cool saddle and a couple carefully chosen accessories and it should be a fun bike. It won't win any accolades, but I think we'll enjoy doing the build off together.

Why not do something simple and use this as an excuse to build something? I built 10 bikes before I bought a single bike specific tool other than a chain breaker. As fast Eddie said, the more bikes you build the more you find yourself wanting a few fancy tools but in the mean time if you run into something you really need a special tool for, the bike shop is your friend.

I'll be looking for suitable subjects and ideas, then. Just remember I have no artistic sense whatsoever when it comes to making stuff of my own!

Pastor Bob is an invaluable member of the C & V forum :) . He not only loves his ratrods, but his other bicycle love is for Schwinns, and he has some real beauties.

I might still build one for the build-off, I have a straight-bar frame that I was going to use but there are a lot of those already. I think I'm going to have that frame powder-coated.

I will when it's done. I looked at it closer last night and the fork is a little out of true and while the paint is pretty, its also scratched. Having to replace the fork kind of opens it all up. It'd would be lovely to have white rubber tires, but the only ones I've found were at the Coker.com site and they were outrageously priced. The last owner was planning for white sidewalls.

So I'm toying around with the idea of the look of an antique racing motorcycle with short fenders, low short handle bars, a springer front end, an 8 speed internal hub and colored rims. I might also go with those brick colored tires.

Or maybe I'll just make it a scraper bike. I've got an '83 Bonneville wagon. I should buy 20" rims for it, make it a scraper and detail the bike to match. ;)
