I am having so much fun. I just starting riding again; although I was never much of a bike rider before. I used my bike to roadwork my dogs, and had a cheap bike I used a couple of years ago. The logistics of hauling my bike on the back of the vehicle, and unloading dogs from crates in the back of the vehicle, made me decide to get a folding bike.
I rewarded myself (since I'd lost 23 lbs in two months) by buying last year's model of downtube folding bikes. so far, although I've put the bracket for the springer attachment on the seatpost, I haven't roadworked any dogs yet. I'm still getting the feel for biking again. So what I've been doing is leaving the bike in the back of my car, and biking for about 20-30 minutes at lunchtime every day. The weather has been great, and it's soooo nice to get outside and do some activity over lunch. I don't know if any of you remember when riding a couple of miles was hard, but that's where I'm at. It's a hilly couple of miles, but I have been doing it, and hopefully it'll get easier. When I'm done, I don't want to stop- as I load my bike back into my car, I feel like getting it back out and taking off in the other direction. I am not comfortable riding the roads with traffic yet, so that's the only not-so-fun part. There isn't a lot of traffic, but I still freeze up a bit when they go by me. I need to put a mirror on so I can see them without turning my head.
When I get back, I feel great for the rest of the afternoon. I still do my elliptical at night, but really look forward to lunchtime now!

Sounds like you are having a swell time. Yes I remember when (last year) 5 miles was a big event. Now I ride 20-25 daily, and would probably do more if I had the time.

Sounds like you're doing great! Definitely get a mirror and don't EVER get too comfortable in traffic. That's when you'll get careless and get yourself killed!

Depending on your distance & work/ride conditions, can you commute to work on occasion?

I would love to, but right now I'm 40 hilly miles from work, and once I get there I work between 3 sites in the city (st. louis) and have to be mobile enough to get from site to site quickly. I am looking to move, hopefully closer, but until we move into one consolodated building I'd still have to travel between sites. I just think that would be ideal, to be able to bike to work, but for now I'll read other's stories about it. I don't see too many commuters on my way to and from work.

Welcome! Lots of good bike paths around the St Louis area to get away from the traffic.

Since I got a mirror, I am more comfortable riding in traffic for sure. I don't rely on it when doing lane changes, etc but it keeps stuff from sneaking up on you and surprising you.

Thanks, now that I'm getting into it, I will have to try some different trails. I am by myself mostly. Today I stopped by rte 66 state park on the way home and rode about 4 miles since I didn't get a chance to ride during lunch today. It's very flat. I plan to put the burghley trailer in the back of my car with my bike and ride there after work with my 4 year old son. Originally I got it solely for roadworking the dogs, and it turns out I enjoy it so much I'm riding almost every day, even if it's just short distances!
