Nothing has been posted for BF rides on the weekend of October 6-7. Hopefully this mild weather will hold.

Anyone have any ideas.... Santa Monica Mountains or Angeles Crest?

Tour de Poway is October 7--I think a few of us will be there.

Some of us have already talked about doing the www.lawheelmen.org 5 counties ride on the 6th. It's the same route as Heartbreak but with a different starting point and a 4 county 80 mile7k+ option that I usually do. It 's a good ride with good support all for only $15 including lunch. This ride always brings out friends that I rarely see after the GT trainers are over. The A.C. 100 is also going on 10/6 but it's sold out and I personally would rather do 5 counties if possible.

I'll be out following bikes around the desert in FC508.

If on Oct 7, definitely interested. Interested in Poway, too, but I wasn't thrilled about that ride last year, so if there's a good alternative ride, I may be game.

Sounds interesting, VB. What's the climbing profile of the 7k ride like?

Hi Joy. I don't have a printed profile but I can tell you about it. The first 12 miles is tough, with 2500 feet of gain and the 2 highest points in the ride at around 6000 feet elevation. After that, there is a 23 mile downhill with a couple small climbs in the middle, then rollers and false flats for miles until lunch. After lunch comes the trip through Lockwood Valley and up Heartbreak Hill, some of the prettiest country in SoCal. A beautiful ride that is harder than it looks on paper.
Last I heard, LAW wasn't sure they were going to do it.

Sounds interesting, VB. What's the climbing profile of the 7k ride like? From the start at Lake of the Woods you climb a couple of k up to Apache Saddle at 6000ft. From there it's a 20+ mile screaming a** descent thats really cool. Then its several miles on hwy 33 that looks flat but actually climbs 1k to the lunch stop at Ozuna fire station. After lunch the climbing starts in earnest taking Lockwood Valley, through Heartbreak Hill , back to the start. The support is really good for this , its all vets of the Grand Tour, good people. Hope to se you there.

I looked on LAW's web site and was wondering why there wasn't more ride info posted.

If you click on Current ride schedule, you'll find the latest. They didn't run it last year due to a fire, but it goes back to at least the eighties, because I did it with them then. If they don't do it, it's possible to do unsupported, but better with the support. I have done the route solo, twice in the rain, in the heat, and with small groups. It's one of my faves.

I am in for this ride!!! Hopefully I will have a better day then I did @ Heartbreak!

I'm interested depending on mileage and how my knees are doing. Saturdays are better for me. Sundays I'd have to be done by 10 to go to church.

I probably won't be able to ride on the 6th in the morning, so I'll be doing some climby type ride on the 7th. It'll probably in the Santa Monica's since I'm avoiding AC on Sundays due to a 1 in 4 chance of a motorcycle accident. I'll probably do the Latigo / Stunt loop I've been meaning to do for a while. If it turns out I can do a ride on the 6th, I'll check out the 5 counties ride.

I'm most likely going to be doing the five counties ride on the 6th. If this ends up on the 7th and I have any leg left, I may join. :)

Latigo? Decker?

Latigo is almost a given since it's my favorite. I'll see what I can do to work Decker into the mix.

How about Stunt instead if it's not hot? I think Joy would like that climb if she could do it again in cool weather. Last time she and I went up it with Thomson, it was blistering hot!

Stunt is better, and is on the route I originally had in mind. If I threw Decker into the middle of a Latigo / Stunt day, that would be pretty cruel of me, wouldn't it.

You could always do something like Onyx. :D

Seriously, though, the more inland mountains and higher elevations are going to be getting really cold soon.

Man, I live in the middle of some of the best cycling mountains around, and yet I always seem to drive 45+ minutes to get to a climbing ride, enough! :)

I need to get some elevation training in soon. But I think my weekends are booked until the third weekend of October. How long do you think the "season" will last, John?

Unless there is rain and thus snow on the mountains, you can bundle up and climb up Baldy all winter, you may just have to skip the lifts. I think that's true of AC as well. Of course, if there is snow or ice, you can forget it.

big john
09-19-07, 07:03 AM
I think you can ride on AC all year if you watch the weather reports and carry enough clothing. There isn't really any elevation in the Santa Monicas, and Baldy village is only 4000 feet, the ski lifts are 6000.
I don't care for Onyx, too far to drive for me and too much traffic, plus the last several miles feel like a death march.
You could go to Mt Pinos and do repeats, but the chance of snow and ice is greater there.
You could also climb 39 from Encanto to AC, gain 5000 feet in 30 miles, the top is 7K or so, but you could go on to Dawson Saddle, (elevation 8000), but I hear they sometimes turn cyclists back.

The latest I've ever climbed up to the Baldy ski lift is Dec 31.

The one thing to watch out for in AC in the winter is BLACK ICE. In the winter, once the water starts to piss out of the mountains, down the ledge faces and onto the HWY you routinly see black ice. When I used to ride my motorcycle up there we would see it often and it is as slick as a fresh oil spill.

Depending on the angle of the sun, sometimes this black ice is hard to notice until your just about on top of it.

Well the last time we were alone and as I recall, you were right up on me all the way up and down Forrestal and Ganado. I think that eased the pain over into the pleasure category for me, quite honestly. :D
