Do a lot of cars use those canyons during rush hour? My rides typoically start around 4:30 and I have a nice little 17 mile climbing route that I liked mid morning, but don't know how safe it is around 5pm.

I usually ride in those canyons a bit later in the evening (closer to 6:00 pm) but have never found the traffic to be very bad. There are a couple of turns coming up Chevy Chase from Glendale where cars tend to cross over the line so you have to watch out when you are descending. Other than that I think it is a great time and place to ride.

Great, thanks! I usually take Lida from Linda Vista (by the Rose Bowl) and then up Chevy Chase from there, so I miss the bottom of Chevy Chase and ascend the whole time I'm on that road. I think I'll try that on Thursday since I'm sick of just riding to the bowl to do laps.
I havent done Lida at night...but as part of our Wed eve loop, we go down Descanso, up Chevy Chase, across Figueroa, then down Linda Vista and back to Chevy Chase...
Traffic is never bad there...it worse on our climb up La Tuna!

I've ridden Lida and Chevy Chase as early as 5:30pm. There is a little more traffic at that time for sure, and it really lightens up after 7:00pm. But still, it isn't awful.
However, Brian, keep an eye out for deer when descending. I have come across deer in the middle of Chevy Chase on descents twice! I descend very slowly down that canyon at night, so I was able to slow down, but if you were going really fast, you could hit one.
