Advocacy & Safety - One county's answer to bike lanes...

Try to make this short. In May I contacted the Yavapi County AZ supervisors about all the gravel and glass and trash in the bike lane running from 89A on Lower Red Rock Loop Road. I was very please with the response that the lane will be swept.

Jump forward to September and to my surprise the county's answer to this issue was to eleminate the bike lane! In fact they just put more loose gravel where the bike lane once was and now you have no choice but to ride on the road. This is progress? Glad I added a 1/2 mile visibility blinky to my road bike.

Yes I call that progress. You and the county wil be better off. Good job!

Not that I'm a fan of bike lanes, but sound like they maybe related to my father in law's former landlords, I made a couple of comments to the his landlords about the blocked off fire escape next to his apartment, and lo and behold, a few weeks later he and the other tennants get a 2 months eviction notice that the landlords are selling the building.

I am not in favor of bike lanes (the stripe in particular) but any extra rideable pavement width is good to have. This was not an improvement.

If all they had done was instead to remove the stripe and then some additional width of the pavement would have been 'swept' by motor vehicles. That would have been a one time cost to remove the stripe (or free if done during routine re-surfacing) instead of a regular (read: unrealiable) maintenance budget.

Exactly.

Is there a possibility they are going to pave it to more width ?
They usually put some type of gravel or rock stuff
down before pavng.

If those bike lanes- were they actually stencilled bike lanes? were installed with federal money or a project that received federal money, I bet the municipality is required to maintain them to a certain standard. or at least NOT to uninstall them with gravel.
