"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - I'm not the slowest USA Cycling guy by the way

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Currently 921st out of 1593 45+ Vets in the national individual TT rankings for 45+ riders on the USA Cycling website. That means at least 1/3 of my peers are actually SLOWER than me. Hard to believe, but there it is. Find somebody else to piss on you Road Nazis. Pcad is getting faster. Oh yes. I don't think KP or Dr. W. have much to worry about however.
How the F can so many licensed guys be slower than me? God, that's unfathomable. But it cheers me up.
And that's my motivation. How far UP that ladder can Pcad crawl? Stay tuned.

Does USA Cycling rank everyone who does a TT? I'd be curious to see how low my ranking is.

Statistically, over half the people slower than PCAD are faster than me.

Put your hand down CastIron, I'll call on you.
Yes Spongy, if you do only do one TT you are in the rankings. That can give the slowest riders an incentive to see how well he/she can do vs. the entire nation/their age, etc. TT's give anyone who wants to ride competitively a safe and non-threatening way to do it. The range of ability/ages at these TT's is fascinating. From Cat 2's who are actually faster than some entry level pros to Dr.W to 12 year old kids to 65 year old men. I never did TTs in my racing days because I never thought I'd be competitive enough to win or place (and I could in mass start races). I didn't think I was fast enough. But now I don't care. And I really enjoy the training/preparation/TT bike aspect of it. I didn't think I'd enjoy any of that. The challenge of getting faster and crawling up the TT ranking ladder is motivating for me. And that's what I need - something to make me faster/fitter. If my competitive cycling life is limited to TT's and rides like the Nyack Ride, that's fine with me.
Very happy to have discovered this. And thanks again for all the great TT advice and input from all the knowlegable TT weenies here, particularly Dr. W and UT Dude, but there are many others. This place rocks.
While appreciate the input about disk wheels, handlebars and skinsuits, what will make me faster now is better training. That means a PM. I'm researching it. Waiting for the Quarq thing, I suspect it will be that or PT SL by February.

Yes Spongy, if you do only do one TT you are in the rankings.
Incorrect. You have to:
A) Be on a full-year license
B) Have said race be reported (for me, about a 25% chance of happening)

And this is the weakness in the system. I've raced 12 races this year, and show up in the ranking as having done 1.

I went thru this last night and im not even ranked. And the one race i'm creditited with is not even me. I wasnt racing that year and i dont live in TN. The racer has my lic. number listed as his for that race.
It also looks like you need to have finished top 25 to get points for crits and RRs.
Sure helps partly explain all the sprinting for 19th place in a Cat 4 crit (aside from the usual stupid reasons). :p

I did two TT's in 2007 (I'll do 5-6+ next year). They were both well attended races with 200 or so participants. Those results make it to the USA Cycling computer. Smaller local (vs. races that attract more of a regional crowd like the TT's I did) results might not. Pcad rides with the Big Dogs. And they **** on his head.

That explains a few races for me, but I have some top 10's that don't show up, and my one posted result is a 25th.

Wait, does this mean merlin IS the slowest USA cycling guy? I don't think it's him. I'd have to imagine being the Dead Friggin Last name on the entire list would be somewhat depressing, eh? Pcad might vie for that coveted honor some day. But not yet... not yet.

I only present that information as proof positive that there are slower licensed USCF racers than Pcad. That's like finding out there are teams worse than the Cubs. It requires a certain suspension of disbelief.

In my particular case it's a bizarre combination of pathetic insecurity combined with an oversized ego, if you had failed to notice by now. If you had noticed, I'd have to wonder why you would care at all. Pcad has spoken.

From reading your posts it sounds like you ride A LOT, like every day.? Maybe you are riding too much? Carmichael talks about this in his book. He tells of a guy who once boasted to him that he hadn't missed a day on the bike in over 2 years. Carmichael responded by basically asking him how fast he was or whether he was winning races. Of course, the guy responded in the negative. On p. 115-116 he talks about how important it is to treat recovery as part of training.

I ride too much, 13,700 miles last year, 10,000 so far this year to date. I will be riding less next season, and I'm actually riding slightly less this year. But rest days will be more critical next year in my attempts to crawl up out of the USA Cycling ranking pit. I am well aware of how detrimental my mileage junkie ways are to getting faster.
In 2005 I kicked a 3+ year physical addiction to oxycontin (opiate painkillers) for back pain, cold turkey. It was like coming off heroin - or so I'm told. All I know is that I was IN BED for nearly three weeks from the withdrawal symptoms, which primarily made me feel like I was 110 years old.
The withdrawal from the stupid miles I ride will be a bit tougher.

Wow, we have some things in common. I have a crushed vertebrae, bu only take muscle relaxers sometimes. My injury is very posture-sensitive so I am able to manage it. Surprisingly, my back feels best when I'm riding. Much better than when I'm sitting around. I got addicted to Klonopin (similar to valium) and went cold turkey. Took 6 weeks to get over. Probably not as severe as oxycontin, but I was taking 20x the prescribed dose. I'm not really addicted to riding; it's just something I need to do so I do it.

I am addicted to riding. Unapologetically so. Endoprhins beat opiates.
The bike schwag is somewhat competitive with the expense of prescription opiates. The grief you get on BF over things like TT bikes is nothing compared to the dirty look of pharmacists doling out yet another oxycontin prescription. Oxycontin was the last resort of my doctors who essentially threw up their hands after 3 years of cortisone injections, physical therapy, facet joint ablation injections (essentially a minor surgical procedure), major back surgery (fusion @ L5/S1) and more therapies than I could list in a concise thread.
My back still hurts, but on days when I ride 4+ hours (like today) it feels the best. I stretch and use heat/ice too (I literally have freezer burn on my ass from the regular ice packs). That's living with the pain. But I've been doing that now for 2.5 years, and thanks to cycling I have never really been happier. I was off my bike for five years. I went pretty insane. This is the calm, rational Pcad you get here. The nut job is gone. Ask my sainted wife. Now you know why I ride 1000+ miles every month and why she's the one pushing me out the door.
