We were car shopping. My wife thought our son should get a Yaris. It sounded so much like a car a pirate would own we spent the day doing our own "talk like a pirate."

The younger folk will tell you that there are only 2 kinds of people in the world: Pirates and Ninjas. Right now, the Ninjas dominate and have a higher coolness rating. But I am a Pirate, and it's nice to see we have our own day! Yaaargh, 'tis nice the blowholes must seat in the galley for the trip.

Too much time in the real Navy to willingly speak pirateeze. By the way, piracy is still a real threat on the high seas. Especially bad off the east coast of Africa and in the vicinity of the Strait of Malacca. The U.S. Navy recently had to deter some African pirates from seizing freighters bound for Somalia. From what I understand, though, few if any of them are into biking.;)

[QUOTE=Artkansas;5296399]The Dread Pirate Roberts!

Yes, and while it's true that Pirates are nothing more than terrorists with boats/ships :eek:, our marketeers have romanticized them (much like they'd done earlier with the outlaws of the "old west" or the killers of the mafia), so that now "talk like a Pirate" is supposed to be a good thing.

Okay, well, I guess Disney is to blame somewhat too (but don't some marketeers work for Disney?). Regardless, I agree that if I had to pick a favorite pirate, it would be The Dread Pirate Roberts! :)

But who was it that said, "You killed my father, prepare to die!" That was D.P.Robert's friend, right?

Did you know that they have now ascertained through DNA that Christopher Columbus was not* a person from Genoa, Italy, but instead a Spaniard? They think they know who he was, and that he was a pirate in his younger days and had to change his name and identity in order to get the queen (whose ships he had pirated) to fund his excursions!

All those who've never had any pirated software say aiyee!

As to the real problem of modern piracy on the "High Seas" I am amazed at
how many "Fresh Water" boaters on the Great Lakes display the Jolly Roger.

A pirate walks into a bar. He has a steering wheel attached to his crotch. The bartender notices and yelps, "Oh, my G*d! You have a steering wheel attached to your crotch!"

The pirate replies, "Arrrrrrrrrgh And it be drivin' me nuts!"

And are we thankin' the stars and g*ds that we be only one day a year for our ilk to come out. Argghhhh!

I have wondered if pirates are a media symbol for mid-eastern terrorists during the War on Terrorism just as aliens and spacemen were a symbol for communism during the Cold War. Communists had the link with Sputnik. And the first time America fought muslim terrorists, they were pirates along the Barbary Coast around Tripoli at the beginning of the 19th Century.

When John Paul Jones raided and sank British merchant ships, he was widely referred to as a pirate in England. It all gets so confusing. Arrrrrh.
