Southeast - Recommended Hotels In D.C.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The wife and I want to get our feet wet on longer rides, so we're thinking of biking into DC (about 30 miles), doing the night thing and heading back the next day. Are some DC hotels more "bike friendly" than others? We'd ideally like to stay close to the Mall or maybe Georgetown. Though it's probably the trendiest solution, we're definitely not B&B type people.
Any recommendations?
I don't know of any that are or are not. I'd use google maps to locate candidate hotels, then call and see what they say. I suspect that a small tip to the bellhop will get your bikes secured in their store room. FWIW, I think the hotels in Rosslyn or Crystal City will be a little cheaper. Rosslyn would be very convenient to the Custis trail.
I'd also ask on the "pedalers" google group (unofficial email list of mostly PPTC members) and the BikeWashingtonDC Yahoo group. There may be some info on the coTowpath group on Yahoo - some riders may have asked about accommodations at the Goergetown end.
If you want to go the other direction, there are B&Bs in the Purcelville and Round Hill areas 20-30 miles west of you at the other end of the W&OD and down Rt7 biz. I recall passing a couple of wineries that might be worth visiting (off Harmony Church Rd between Leesburg and Hamilton and off Mountain Rd N of Rt9 in Hillsboro).

We stayed at the Club Quarters (http://www.clubquarters.com/home_pub.asp) back in May for an inline skating event (http://skatedc.org/calendar/months/May-2007.html#1178928000-0). It was surprisingly cheap, and rather nice. Not sure about bike storage, but they do have complimentary bottled water dispensers on every floor and it's less than two blocks from the White House.

Rosslyn would certainly be very convenient. Cross one bridge to get to Georgetown, or go down the (usually busy) path to the Memorial Bridge and cross over to the Mall that way. You could also finagle your way south from Georgetown on the DC side of the river, go past Watergate and the Kennedy Center, and pop up by the Lincoln Memorial.
It's hard for me to recommend any specific hotels, though, because I haven't lived here for very long. My parents stayed at the Phoenix one year because it's close to my place, but the rooms are TINY and not really good for holding even one bike. The only hotel I've taken my bike to was the Doubletree down in Crystal City, and the Swiss girl working at the front counter was quite friendly and asked about the bike (definitely a conversation piece and not a hassle).
