"You know, for having such a bleak outlook on pirates you are well on your way to becoming one: sprung a man from jail, commandeered a ship of the fleet, sailed with a buccaneer crew out of Tortuga, and you're completely obsessed with treasure." - Happy Birthday, from Chip and, of course, Capt. Jack Sparrow :D

Wow! That was great! It really kind of made me sad about the way I got my Atlantis... I just went to the bike shop, tried out some bikes, and came home with it. It would have been more fun if I had lusted after it for a year or so!
Thanks! That was a great B-day gift. Not only was it fun to read, but it kept me from cleaning the house for an hour!

Wow! That was great! It really kind of made me sad about the way I got my Atlantis... I just went to the bike shop, tried out some bikes, and came home with it. It would have been more fun if I had lusted after it for a year or so!
I waited almost two years from the time I first rode a Rivendell until I could afford one. And even then I couldn't afford it...we finally just had enough on one of our credit cards to go ahead with the purchase. During that time I was like a delusional 12 year old, trying to figure out what new car to buy with what options.
When I finally got my bike, I started riding around our building's parking in the dark, hoping no one would notice. (It wouldn't matter, everyone in our building thinks I'm nuts anyway.) The next day I headed out into the wind, and decided I would ride until I was tired, then turn around. At 54 miles I figured A) this was a damn good bike, and B) I better turn around so I would get home before dark.
So, my very first ride was 108 miles!!! I stopped maybe 5 or 6 times to adjust things.
It was nip and tuck between a Rambouillet and an Atlantis...but I chose the Rambouillet mainly because they had one in stock my size (the Atlantis was a three month wait at that point). Someday I hope to buy an Atlantis, then compare the two over the course of a summer.
What a good story. I'm envious, actually. I didn't even know about Grant Peterson until after I got my bike (my Bridgestone is one year pre-Grant). All I knew is that I wanted a bike shop like the one I got my Bridgestone in, so I found the BOB list and asked. I didn't realize that Rivendell was as uncommon as it is... or that there was a waiting list. I just knew I didn't want a "new-fangled" bike. The bike shop just happened to have one in my size all set up and ready.
But now that I have several bikes (how did that happen?), the only one that I could stay on all day is my Atlantis. I don't know what makes it so comfortable, but it's basically perfect for me and my needs. I do wish it weighed less and could go faster... I have a hub generator and I always have a loaded pannier. I don't think I'll ever sustain good speed on it. But for the kind of riding I do 90% of the time (adventuring!), it's the perfect bike.

I think the actual weight difference is only two pounds between the Atlantis and the Rambouillet...although the Rambouillet is pretty heavy by "current road bike standards."
What I find really interesting is that when I finish a long ride, and I lift my bike up to get it in the back of our mini-van, I'm always surprised how much it weights. It's like lifting up an empty carton of milk you think is full, and you lift too hard and the carton flies up in the air...only the opposite. The Rambouillet is so light and sensitive when I ride it, I just assume it's 19 pounds until I lift it up! I think it's about 23 pounds with no water or seat bags.
My guess is that you could buy a half dozen more "dream bikes" and none of them would come close to the Atlantis.
