What are some movies you would like to see remade with modern special effects and/or different actors/directors?
Just a thought that came to mind when bikingshearer made a joke about "Deliverance" in the "why is this guy trying to sell me meat?" thread.

Memphis Belle. Great movie but some of the scenes are very cheesy looking.

Mulan.
I agree...I've love to see this done as a real (not cartoon) epic style movie.

The Hobbit c'mon Peter Jackson, you know you want to...
He was trying to, and then legal battles were holding it up, I think.
Then....he got screwed over royalties for LOTR, and I don't think he's going to do it now. I actually heard they may get somebody else to do it.

Me too, or an all CGI type dealio, like toy story, shrek, or whatever. Something like that.

I can't think of any. Any of the old movies I appreciate, I like because they are so bad.

No.....I'd like to see it as a REAL movie, not a KIDS movie. No cartoon or CGI.

The entire Debbie Does series.

I know I was saying I wouldn't mind CGI, but I was agreeing with you on the real movie thing. I'm a much bigger fan of real people in movies rather than cartoons.

The old movies were done the hard way. Never again will there be a movie like Waterloo with Guiness record setting numbers of actors, each of whom have on a uniform. It's all digitized. I like the old movies because they were made with little or no special effects. Films like The Wild Bunch, Aliens, Animal House, the spaghetti westerns, Dillinger, 1941, Young Guns, SGT York, Caddy Shack, they had no computerized garbage. Sure once in a while modern movies will be made that way, but few if any remakes are made in a way I can enjoy. If a scene looks fake as hell because it is, I'm not going to enjoy watching it.
Although I don't really like Star Wars, that series is a good example. The "special edition" looks silly.

There was a whole series???
How about "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly"....but I don't know if I could stand to see anybody other than Clint in that role.

Overall I agree with you quite a bit. I am definitely for a great story and acting and to hell with the computerized special effects.
However, many old movies were just too cheesy and over the top for me. I'd like to see them redone in a less cheesy way. Get a good director with a good vision.

Streetfighter.
It sucked so bad the first time, by comparison Chuck Norris deserves an oscar for his starring role in Texas Rangers.
Plan Nine from Outer Space. But only if they use the same budget or smaller.

If it was a great movie the first time, I don't think it should EVER be remade. If it was a ****ty movie the first time, I would have no desire to see it as a remake.

Exactly.
Something I would like to see however is different perspective on my favorite old movies, that is, cover part of a story that was never told before. Not a sequel, but a look back at a different part of the story with an all new cast and crew. I've long thought it would be cool if a good director went and made a film about The Wild Bunch back in their younger days, but such things inevitably never live up to the originals. Like Dumb and Dumberer.

I somewhat agree with great movies, but completely disagree with ****ty movies. Bad movies (some of them) have potential to be good. If the story is good, it can be a great movie if it has good actors and a good director.

Some movies should be left alone. This one of them.
And the two Clint spaghetti westerns, "Fistful of Dollars" and "For a Few Dollars More", are already remakes.

Star Wars, Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace...starring Jar Jar Binks.
George Lucas needs to re-do that piece of filth.
Also...Deep Throat.
The Final Countdown. Kirk Douglas made the movie, but I thought a little bigger budget, better effects and a good sound track would really make this a good movie.

Check out 3:17. Pretty cheesy IMO. Also, it's hard to tell from that clip, but on a HD tv the scenes where they show the planes they're shooting at aren't very believable if I recall. It was that they're either cheesy or they were actual war footage which was very discontinuous to the film because of the different film formats. They could make the film so much better just by using modern special effects, streamlining, and cleaning things up.
Catch 22 - It would be nice to see a more modern take on the story. Guy Ritchey could probably do well with it.
And Slaughterhouse Five needs to be wiped off the face of the earth. No movie of that book will ever be good.

I tried to read Slaughterhouse Five probably ten times. Never could get past about page 40. Ended up selling the paperback copy I had at a yard sale a couple of months ago. :o

...I mean, they didn't even have the song "The Final Countdown" in the movie! What a waste.

+1 on the Star Wars movies. Didn't like "Return of the Jedi" (too Spielberg-like with all the fighting teddy bears) and thought all three of the latest ones were garbage.
Papillion but in 2 or 3 parts because it's too long for one movie.
They butchered the book the first time around.

Any of Alexander Dumas' books: The Three Musketeers, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Man in the Iron Mask. They've been done multiple times already I know - but still waiting for a decent one.

That's because it's not a particularly good read.

Good Answer..I'd love to see that redone. And not with (or anything like) that Last Samurai movie with Tom Jerkoff Cruise.

It WAS a miniseries. One of the only books in history that TV did justice to.
I wouldn't go that far. It was a worthy attempt. I think the characters could have been done better though. It really might translate better to anime then to film.

...Last Samurai movie with Tom Jerkoff Cruise.
It's funny how they thought there was smokeless powder in the 1870's in that movie. The end of that movie made me want to female dog in heat slap the director.
Maybe not a remake but a sequel to 'Breaking Away'.

I'm sticking with "Deliverance," but I've decided on a new concept. This version will be done by the Muppetts.
Kermit gets the Jon Voigt lead role, of course.
Oscar the Grouch for the Burt Reynolds part. (Unlike Burt Reynolds in the original, we can actually break the beejeezus out of his leg - none of that phony cow-bone-strapped-to-the-leg special effects BS for this production.
Maybe have Fozzie Bear take over for Ned Beatty (sorry, Mystery Meat Guy, you tested great but we decided to go in another direction).
Elmo can be either one of the backwoods Nasty Boys, or perhaps the Ronnie Cox role - just so long as he dies a horrible death somewhere along the way. No, wait, I've got it: Elmo takes the Ronnie Cox part, and Bert and Ernie can be Mr. "Squeal Like a Pig" and Mr. "He Shore Has a Purty Mouth." Which one's which? Flip a coin.
Miss Piggy as the Sheriff at the end. ("Don't evah do nuttin' like this agin, y'heah, Kermie?")
Big Bird as the banjo-playing kid at the beginning.
Original script, exactly as written (except maybe draw out Elmo's death scene to be more . . . satisfying for everyone who, like me, detests that squeeky, obnoxious little parasite).
I'm thinking Academy Award, baby. Maybe seven or eight of 'em. And finally, a flick to give "Team America" a run for its money in the "All-Time Best Puppet Sex Scene" competition.
Better start getting Oscar working on his archery skills . . . .

Please... don't combine those two movies when they're remade!
As far as remakes go, I'd nominate "Salem's Lot". Great book, cheesy movie when it was done originally. I think it was remade as a TV mini-series, but I haven't seen it.

Any Akira Kurosawa movies, not just modernized, but translated to American culture. The Magnificent Seven was one example (although I still enjoyed Seven Samarai much more).
