Road Cycling - Bikes and Weight

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

What would you say a good weight for a bike would be if:
1. You are just getting into the hobby and want to spend less than $1000
2. You are serious about biking as a hobby and want to get something that won't keep you from riding with the A group (obviously this is much more about your fitness, but how heavy are most A group riders bikes)
3. You want to race
4. You are starting to count grams in the single digits
If you mean you can spend around $1,000 on a bike, then the only thing that will keep you from hanging with the A group is lack of ability. For that money you can get a pretty decent road bike...it won't weigh 15 pounds, but that shouldn't matter. As for ability, I assume you know you can't buy that....
Counting grams is pretty pointless at most levels of the sport.

19 lbs. (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=170148936961)
MODS: feel free to slap me for blatant commercialism.
I used to ride a Specialized allez elite and it was about 20lbs. $1000 new. Upgraded the wheels and dropped the weight to around 18lbs. I sold the thing a year later for $500 so, there are some good deals to be had for under $1000 for sure.
Not sure about weight of A-rider bikes, but on somof the faster (racer) type group rides around here, there is a wide, wide range of bikes, and therefore weight. I'm guessing at least a 5lbs spread?
Don't worry about counting grams until you ride a while and figure out what you like. Further, I think it doesn't make sense to count grams with the budget your talking about.
