Mountain Biking - What do you guys think about this offer?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

An acquaintance is offering to sell his mountain bike. I've been a commuter for years but am just now getting into the sport.
What do you guys think about this offer?
Giant XTC Pro-Series

Air Suspension
lightly used
$700
He says he bought it with all the bells and whistles for $4500--

air suspension? any more details?
without a parts list, hard to say. Though those XTC frames are selling in the 300-500 range alone right now.

I don't know about the 4500.00 new. I have the 05 full composite, better specs, nicer fork and it retailed for 3500.00.
It's a lot of bike for the money, if it fit's you well. The closest offering from the 08 lineup is the XTC Alliance. Similar frame, not spec'd quite as nice, and retails for 1400. I like the 04 better if that's the one your looking at.

Are you sure he bought it? Maybe just "found" it on campus somewhere...

Sorry, it's just odd for someone to spend $4,500 on something, lightly use it, then turn around and sell it for $700. People with plenty of money don't end up as such by making financial decisions like that.

Tell him bikes depreciate quickly and he'd be lucky to get $10 for it. Then offer $20.
Then sell the frame to me for $50, so I have a short track bike.
