BMX - Trials Riding: What bike to Buy

Hey guys. This is the closest forum I could find to trials Riding. Although trials riding is slightly different that BMX riding, I was wondering if you guys could help me. I have watched trials rider Ryan Leech on youtube.com and want to do what he does. (Yea right!!) But anyways, I was wondering if anyone knows what kind of bike he rides? It's not a true trials bike if you were to search for trials bikes on google. It looks like it had more of a mountain bike feel to it. Any suggestions as to what trials bike to buy would be much appreciated. Thanks!!

I know he sometimes rides a Norco Moment, but I don't think that's what you mean. Chances are it's a Norco, though.

I've heard his frame is made by Echo but Norco puts their name on it. While all of the other frames that they sell are genuine Norco's, his is the only outsourced one.

Maybe that's true. I just know that it's Norco branded.

Hey if anyone knows of any good Trials Riding forums, please post up. I'm basically looking for good trials videos to watch online. I've seen most of the vids on youtube, just looking for more higher quality videos with some of the best riders around the world.

i'll save you the google trouble and just tell you the largest trials forum (in english anyway) is www.observedtrials.net

there's even a thread in there somewhere about what bike ryan rides in that video, a thread that actually has the answer in it. anyway, that site will give you plenty of knowledge and recommendations.

You know you really aren't that great of a mod? He asked a question, expecting to get some good answers. If he just googles 'trials riding forum' he won't get much of what he may be looking for. Hell, the first thing that comes up is for unicyclists...

If you want to get your feet wet in trials, I'd suggest you start off with a DJ bike. It obviously isn't trials dedicated, but it's more versatile and can do other things should you become frustrated or disinterested with trials. If you like trials, then you can move on.

If you're set on a trials bike, you have three options.

Mod- 20" rims (sometimes 19" rear wheel)
These are lighter and more flickable than stock bikes. They also tend to be cheaper and the rims hold up well. They get on their rear wheel nicely and will be easier to start out on but are unstable on two wheels compared to a mod and don't do pedal ups or anything requiring speed very well.

Stock- 26" Rims
Heavier and more expensive. The higher weight makes started from a dead stop, standing jumps are a bit more difficult. However, they are very nice on both wheels and are much easier to do pedal ups and such on them.

24"
Kind of rare. Rims are a but stronger than 26" wheels. Kind of like a compromise bike erring on the side of handling like a 26er. As a side note, if you plan on competing, riding a 24" bike will put you in the stock category.

I'd suggest you build a trials bike if you're going to get one. Echo and Adamant make very good frames. Magura makes trials-specific brakes. I'd suggest you run a Magura disc brake up front and a Magura hydrualic v-brake in the rear, other wise you risk smashing your disc on crap. The magnesium Syncros Mentals are good for trials, but they're pinned, i.e., you might hit the pins out and strip the threads. If you want, get caged pedals and avoid the problem. But for me, I run pins. Better grip.

Go seatless, it's much better.

That post was way before I was a mod, I've only been a mod for little more than a month I think. I don't remember.
