Thank him for me for sacrificing so that my family can live free. And thank you for raising a son that is willing to serve his country.

I come from a family with a lot of individuals who all enlisted on their own, including my nephew enlisted 2-3 years ago and who is over in Bahgdad for his second tour at this moment.

I am from a country saved by people like him several times - and it is not forgotten.

Worry not my lady...the navy is likely the safest route he could go, it is for a noble cause, and if he has an ounce of character from his upbringing he will come home a much better man.

Too true!

He is full of good, and I have no doubt that he will be fine. I will sure worry about him the whole time though.

Thats awsome he is going to college and it is a great duty and something to be proud of when a family child wants to serve his/her country:).

My grandfather always complained that the Navy boys had the best food. (he was Army Air )
So your son has that going for him.

Careful......................
As a lifetime member of Uncle Sam's Marble Club, I'm glad your son is joining! After all us (former) Jarheads gotta get a ride from somebody.
He'll do just fine.
Happy Birthday BTW.

Well, not to burst anyone's bubble here about being "safe" or whatever, but there are over 10,000 sailors wearing tan cammies in the desert at the moment.

Also, sea duty can be pretty dangerous. If he'll be on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier, for example, it's pretty much the most dangerous 4.5 acres on the face of the earth.

That said, he'll do fine, MsVicki. We have great training to keep him safe. Tell I said welcome aboard.

Been there, done that, what does he want to specialize in?
I would have to say that I enjoyed it. Spent a couple years on a carrier and a couple on shore duty.
wish him luck and tell him boot camp is all mind games, its just to bring you around to the navy's way of thinking.

Wish him good luck and to be safe. I love the armed forces and what they do for "their" countries. You should consider trying to talk him out of it though, Really. They do have a cooling off period right?

I tried to join the AF back in the day and couldn't. If you ever get called to serve and for some reason, do not want to, being allergic to peanuts is a way to get out of it.

I would ordinarily offer a flip and wiseass remark upon hearing news like this, having been through it myself......

but not to their mother.

I hope he finds what he is looking for.

Me = Warrier then Teacher Can't have one without the other doncha know.

Ms Vicki; is your son going as a seaman, airman, fireman or constructionman (seabees) The navy is very safe, but the right job choice can make it safer. I did the career on a carrier flight deck and came out safe and sane. As in most jobs, it's what you make it and he sounds like he should do fine seeing as how he is related to you.
