Cyclocross - Can I CX with my fixed gear track bike?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

think he means the mark v/ angus one, since the rob roy won;t be here til February.
Exactly. I've started shopping for cross tires, now.
While this thread a very enlightening (& thanks for the good info to the people who posted) I decided to buy a full-on CX rig. 07 Lemond Poprad.

i'd want a rear brake if only to stop the cranks from cycling around and hitting me in the arse (or thighs, or calves)
seriously, pushing a fixie at a full tilt sprint can be treacherous.

Good call on the Poprad, MIN. Except now it'll be tough to pick you out at the races and say hi. You'll love the Cross Crusade series. Don't forget your cowbell!
Here I am on my day-old Lemond Poprad. This is from today where I used the bike for the Livestrong Challenge ride. It was heavy rains and lots of wind but the bike was so smooth and stable. I have to admit it was difficult doing 70 miles (and 10 miles to get to the ride) on 35c knobbies. I feel like I did after the STP double century this summer.

fMy $0.02. Before you ride a SS/FG in a cross race, I'd watch Eric Tonkin dominate the SS/FG cat at the crusade. Check his smooth dismounts and whats required to be competitive. Since you've got a new bike, nevermind, but thought you'd might another recommendation.
Nice Poprad! I wish I could justify yet another bike purchase, but alas... I cannot. So I'm going to try to CX-ify my POS Hard Rock with drop bars and thinner knobbies.

Because I hate flat bars. I couldn't ride more than 20 minutes without wrist and hand discomfort and bar ends weren't much help. So I've already put drops on it: a set of old SR Road Champion drops with RSX brifters. Works fine.

Groovy, looks cool.
Thanks, it needs a tweak or two. Like I said, I'd like to find skinnier, narrower tires. These ones are okay for packed dirt or grass, but I can't climb any soft stuff. And I should find a shorter stem since the drops stretch me out farther than the flat bars do. Oh, and maybe some spd pedals too.
Anything else I should think about?

Clipless pedals? I use Sidi Dominators and Eggbeaters.

Yeah. I have Shimano 520 spd pedals on my commuter; I'll probably just put those on and use PI Vagabond II shoes.

I was in the SS race at Alpenrose and Tonkin was on a fixed! There were about 3 or 4 others.
The SS are very serious and race with the B's. I didn't finish DFL, but close! I was able to ride the entire course on my 42 x 18 , but felt a bit over geared. This was a dry day.
The last race was a mud fest and no way for me on that gearing.

LOL! I have the twin to your bike, except I took off all the stickers, and I'm using bar-ends instead of brifters. These pics were from when I was building it up. Sorry for the crap pics - they're from my phone.

You could try doing something like what this guy did. Install a 26 or 650 wheel at the back - gives you more tire clearance, and figure out something clever to do with your front wheel. (Perhaps not what he did though.) Maybe buy a cross fork?
