Cyclocross - Using bar ends that look like drops, legal?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I have a bike that is currently fitted with a flat bar.
I understand the rules against bar ends in mass start events.

My questions is,

Can I use the bar ends that look like drops?

If not, I will just slide then off and go go go.

Has anyone seen these on the field?

Thanks!

woah.. I don't have an answer for you, but I've never seen those before. Wacky!

I would ask the race director when you are signing in so you aren't surprised at the starting line. It could go either way, on the one hand your bars'd be no more dangerous with or without these things, on the other hand the flier probably does read "no bar ends".

Our series rules are no forward facing bar ends, so I think you're probably ok in your series too.

Probably. I am guessing that the reason they don't allow bar ends is because they don't want them going through some ones ribs. You'd have to ask at the race.

I don't have a cyclocross bike...yet (eventually I want a Cross Check). However, I do have those bar ends on my HardRock. I can't say about the allowed at races as I know nothing about that side but the bar ends are not going to be just like using a drop bar.

I like mine because they give me a couple more hand positions and stretch me out a little but they are fairly small compared to a real drop bar. In short, I would say that they are ok for different hand positions but don't expect them to be like using drop bars as far as total comfort and aerodynamics.

You will probably have to bar tape them up too so sliding them off easily might be a problem. The mounting screw killed the palm of my hand, even with gloves, when I was in the 'pseudo hoods' position until I added bar tape. I also had to move my brifters in an inch on the bar otherwise it would have been too cramped to use the flat bars as normal.
