"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Watch those lap cards, kids...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. ...Somehow when you don't, defeat can rather easily be snatched from the jaws of victory.
Meh. That's all I'm saying.

Yep, but more importantly listen for the bell. I've seen races where they rang the bell a lap early, and (at least back then) the rules say to go by the bell. Those who complained that the lap cards still showed 2 to go at the bell were SOL

Yep. I have a knack for forgetting things very easily. For instance, the turn after the bell rings, I'll ask; "Was that the bell?"

Ah, the Unknown Distance race. Always a favorite of the crowd and racers alike.

You do know that's an actual event in velodrome racing, right?
There's no such thing as good or bad tactics in that one.

Stop it. I've really been thinking about moving to Austin, and this revelation may have just pushed me over the edge.

Just wait.
I hear they're coming out with a SRM with a GPS and DVD player.
New riders might also want to know about "Warp Laps" which are a device that officials use to get an event back on schedule.
Taking advantage of the fact the most racers pay only partial attention to the lap board, they'll cut laps out of the race on the fly.
As an announcer, I'm all in favor. But as a racer, I tend to get pi55ed.

I don't look at the SRM during Road Races and TT's. Not on purpose either, I just don't. I watch it in TT's for pacing, and workouts to keep my intervals on target, but I don't even look down during races. It just tracks the data.

Around our way, it also could be a prime lap.

And really gets confusing when the penultimate lap is a prime lap. Two bell laps in a row. Not fun when the lack of oxygen has already ended all rational thought.

Too bad Hendrix didn't have a 'Lactic Acid Haze' number. We could play it on our iPods.

Warp laps are pretty blatant around here.

Absolutely! The sadistic bastids around here ring them with 2 laps to go all the time.
