Reaffirmation of why I hate Chinese bikes

I've had a so-called 26" Huffy Santa Fe for all of a day as a loaner, and when I'm done it will again be a loner. Brand new and the fenders don't stay put nor does the seat with the really bad clamping mechamism for the post. Last thing it did was either lose the screw to the brake or the bearings are deceased.

When I'm done with this loaner I will leave it very alone.

East Hill

So are you saying that the bearings got blown on a loaner which was a loser?

Instant Bike Reviews--no water needed.

Torker Tristar--okay but herky jerky ride only meant for Bullriding and Sex, hates sidewalk driveway cuts, seemingly wants to go where no man should go afore (feels like you're gonna roll). Would be C- but doesn't break hubs in less than two daze.

Grades are as such: 3. I Prefer THIS (for the ride but not to deliver mail of COURSE).

That rain will be here today. No highs lower than 46 in the next 7 days but the wind chill will factor in...

I got paid the last $50.00 I was owed on a stereo today :) Bought groceries, made the co-payment on my blood pressure medicine and saved enough to pay for some used computer parts and work to find a better rolling computer cart/desk for the bedroom. Somedays you meet more people when you have money and solely because you CAN shop so you go more places than the corner store.

East Hill

Spring is really here. I made my rounds yesterday in sunny 70 degree no wind weather. It's trash day so I cruised the trash, exchanged movies and books at the Library and bought a new really long tee shirt at the general store to lounge in.
Today was much the same so I refurbished my trash finds of yesterday, made some chafing gear for the bike and made lunch (broiled chicken backs and cold slaw. It's a southern thing). Now I'm watching the Wrens, waiting for the rain and having a glass of wine while thinking about what I want to rant about in my blog.

This is an alt post for alt bike because I am a "Adventures of Rollfast fan.:)

I was told I wil be getting Tempest back next week and that as soon as the tires as fixed on a real 1990's Schwinn there I would have a better loaner than the Torker trike. I went up the alley between SW 4th and 5th Aves yesterday and YES, the Torker only drives ONE WHEEL as the LBS owner says and it was incredibly hard getting up plus I was stubborn on top of that...that really wasn't wise with an offset drive wheel, no load and not much traction or power. Did not feel good and it's not such a big deal on my Rollfast...even the HUFFY got up Hospital Hill with ease.

You don't really realize that the least steep section of the hill is a block away from where Evergreen Cemetary is at? No...but that was disheartening. I'll be happy to have power and speed and not lean into everything...not comfortable. It has hauled a lot of groceries and computer stuff though.

I have fans? Okay, I 'spose and thanks. Nothing tends to move swiftly on disability checks and having a lot of hobbies, but I hope I'm making a good story and not a strange epic of it. I really like my bike and that's something I wouldn't have said as emphatically five years ago. I postponed so many things and I want to break the dam open and get the rest of my stuff finished...the anxious waiting has been like waiting for Christmas forever.

I have a working camera again so even though I wasn't able to document a lot of things the results will be available for all.

Saw on NWCN it's going to be another wet one around the Sound, nobody's going to fix the Key Arena and why should they, it was okay for a lot of the day and cold, windy and dark clouds rolled in before I got home. Still in the upper 40's but the chill is more like the spring it should be right now.

OT PS: Seattle deserves better treatment than it's received from the NBA and the Arena is something that should be preserved as the useful servant to the city it has always been. It's not exactly in a spot designed for 5,000 cars but when they built the Fair the whole idea was alternative transportation and in 1962 it was a revelation. Having actually been to the Needle, Seattle Center, downtown in the "riot zone" and having walked past the grand old Paramount a few times in 1992 I thought at first parking quite a ways off and walking to the Monorail was strange but it was a walker's paradise.

Of course, the excellent delis and pistachio ice cream in honey cones didn't help any potential weight benefits! Hey, I earned that trip selling more ads for the college's music dept. program flyers and it was the Music Educators Northwest Conference as the Sheraton Downtown.

I never saw traffic as bad as Boise's except the highway (it was pretty nice though and the lower speed limits did help) and having fire/rescue and ambulance vehicles zooming around every five minutes was interesting. We stayed at a house in Tacoma. I got all the way up to Aberdeen just prior to 2001 but other than a couple visits to Walla Walla in '04 and then Tricities in the late seventies that's all of Washington State I've traveled through.

East Hill
03-14-08, 08:56 AM
Yes, Seattle's nice for walking, at least in downtown (stay away from where the drugs get sold, though  ). Plus, there's always Pike Place Market :D .

I think Seattle's getting the shaft from the NBA, but people here are so sick of the deals going on with the various sports teams that they don't care anymore.

Yes, Rollfast, you do have fans! It's fun to watch progress on a build and we can empathise with life getting in the way of getting things done as quickly as we might want...

I saw that! I'm almost done packing a parts set and then I have to replace a power supply and get Windows out of STOP mode on a computer I built (probably not hard as it indicated a bad CD drive or cable maybe) then clean out a chunk of the house quickly before bed. My folks came over and I have shoes, a real leather belt custom ordered that won't fall apart and has the correct holes set up and another computer to build for my living room and the neighbor later. Parts sets out = parts in and more sets out or in use.

I had dinner with an old girlfriend and a haircut set to go and of course! The trike's front tire is FLAT

Time to get the computer to her tomorrow, patch the tire and deliver a speaker swap, check a DVD player (hopefully he's confused again but since the entire stereo/video system but for a portable TV was sold to him by ME it's not like it's hard to work on). The job the Altec Model Ones and and small 80s Magnavox 3-ways do with his Sony Dolby Prologic receiver alone is payback except lettuce works good for that even more ;)

I'm hoping to get a real theater seat for the bedroom computer/video projector and I might have a good trade for part of the stuff I wanted. That and a better rolling computer cart would really help. I'm closer to creating a You Tube clip on Tempest, then a real intro of this Steven the steadfastcoward cat who had 900 views plus before even posting a clip (and an overzealous comedian as a subscriber I booted because a sub with no clips was silly).

If I get to occupy the saddle of a genuine "end-times" 90's Schwinn fairly soon I wish upload some nice pix and review it (doubt it will be sour at all) for actual bike action right here in Hooterville.

I was told the primer was done and they were working on it...he's going to put the two BELL tubes with built in Slime on the Schwinn so I can ride a real bike til then and show me the progress (they are an auto body shop after all but he's a certified GM paint tech and he promised me it would be done right...and free, after all). That's Monday.

PSOT If you saw Boise State lose to Louisville Friday, none of us is too disappointed...it sure was a fun ride!

Not an April Fool's joke!

I stopped at the corner store to ask the owner (the paint shop owner too) how it was coming along and told him I was keeping the tires up and taking good care of the bike and it was very nice and fun. He said that he spent about 30 dollars on it and I didn't have to put another together because it was mine now!

He told me the saddlebags were nearly done and it would be a bit longer as he had a paying customer with a motorcycle to do also but the bike was indeed mine.

In other news the LBS moved up the hill to the old Circle K building, formerly occupied by a salon/fashion store, ready to open today. I am going to get a Schwinn tank, bell, horn, rack, paperboys and then a front basket for the neighbor's grocery trips (he got past me on paperboys when he got a Mongoose with full suspension) plus a Honda Trail taillight to go with an old Sears bullet lamp. I have spare fenders I hope will work and they will get cleaned up, I will salvage the best (hoops)? what are they, I need to sleep, paint them white with greenish pinstriping.

I now have the best of old and new--that's pretty swell!

Rollfast
04-05-08, 04:24 AM
I rode over to Fruitland, Idaho and stopped at the KYMCO motorcycle dealer to look for a taillight for Germaine. I found parts of a Honda ATC and located a chrome fender with a big, wide rectangular light on a fat mount with a plate bracket. I wanted to give 15 for it, he wanted 25, he took 20. I don't haggle a lot if I have it and want it now and he has such neat junk anyway. He was the first person I would go to for that stuff anyway.

That fender is wide enough to use as the end of a rain spout!

Now I've managed to set up buying a full Sony Mavica setup from a Craiglist ad as at least I've always wanted one and for $30 it's better than making this HP Photosmart 120 get smarter...also am waiting for a response back from the guy in Boise I'm buying a rack, paperboys and a tank from and I'll have a friend run over for them on their next business trip.

Digging back into CL listings and inquiring has always paid handsomely.

Only bummer all week was that I missed out on the 4-channel dbx 155 noise reduction unit I wanted to go with my 4 track reel to reel TEAC A-2340 I won for 99 cents I won Tuesday because I was out and thought it closed the 6th. OOPS

That boo-boo was a tough one. Type I units are never cheap, and I gather they are up to Type III but Type I is designed for reel decks and II was made to use on cassette decks and modified for MTS TV stereo. All the "goodies" like compresser/limiters, dynamic expanders, extenders, subharmonic generators and Drive Racks with or without their cards cost some professional type money, and those are mostly used!

I think Tuesday's gains may have been my luck this week but I have some Laserdiscs lined up for a low price too. It took 25 years to blossom into full geekdom? Must have been the summer of 1981 when I pumped unleaded into a diesel CHEVETTE? and lost TWO WEEKS PAY so Dad could fix that in the bay. No clearance SX-3600 for ME! I bought a 16 watt Sanyo instead and waited over 20 years for my first Pioneer receiver, an SX-6000 from 1971! I've had 6 or 7 stereos, 3 quads, 4 cassette decks, one EQ, two CD players, two DVD 5-disc carousel type players, a digital timer, two tuners, 3 integrated amps, two turntables, numerous speaker components and cabinets and ONE H-R99 8 track recorder(!) in the last five years...must like Pioneers I guess?

Certainly NOT. I was extremely distraught though.

I did my part tonight changing the red part of the badge to dark blue and sent it back to Cory to clean up and do what he does much better. I did some auction shopping for a few needed things and somebody I know told me they only needed the case so I got another (Sears) VHS camcorder COMPLETE including a telephoto lens and maybe a good battery! A modulator was in there too...not bad for a dollar. got a Moody Blues LP also--Long Distance Voyager. I've actually seen the Moodies in concert (over ten years ago) with our local symphony orchestra, officially the first concert at the new Idaho Center (state basketball tournament was the first event, it used to house the Idaho Stampede pro basketball team (CBA then NBA development league/NBADL or the D league as some call it) and still has the legendary Snake River Stampede rodeo, now held indoors. I remember that the band and their sound crew did NOT like the acoustic panels in the walls so we actually had to stare at INSULATION etc after they were TAKEN DOWN.

Not even Eric Clapton demanded such an extraordinary thing!

Here...try this on for now...I still have some rough spots and a white one even but I turned it over to Cory for cleanup and more 'metal'...If you look hard enough you will see reddish areas on some edges and the blue at the top is slightly mottled because I fill by hand with a "magic lasso" in Photoshop. That took a while with my unsteady hand.

Well, one little deal but it was still impressive...

I went to put the Schwinn's kickstand up a day or so back and the stand was coming off...

It's held on by some bracket and two spot welds the backet/bolt were gone then both welds broke out fairly cleanly, leaving two holes in the tubing behind the bracket. That's it. Hardly harmed. I'm doing up to the LBS with what I have of the Rollfast's old stand and get it rigged up until I can get another forked stand like the one on Tempest (maybe the free bell too)!

Chris the LBS guy and his helper found a spare doohickey to clamp the old Rollfast stand on. I have to go out and tighten it back up because I had 40+ lbs of groceries in the baskets and it weighed a bit trying to hold that up, even up against the wall...I am going to get a twin stand from him and a bell too. Have to wait a week or two for that stimulus check as the IRS said it would be mailed in that period.
