Fifty Plus (50+) - New to Forum

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hello all,
Just replied to a post by Europa in this forum so thought I should introduce myself.
I've been lurking here for a long time but not posted before.
I am 66 years old and a retired school principal.
My wife Helen and I got back into bikes after not riding since school days when we picked up a couple old 3 speeds at a car boot sale. When the tires wore out we traded them for Giant cypress's.
We used to think 5km around the block was a major ride. Now its about 100km per wk or more as I am ride co-ordinator/ leader for our Over 50 riding group.
Enthused by friends riding around Australia we bought ourselves Logo trikes and toured from Devonport to Hobart in Tasmania. Earlier this year we joined the Bike Victoria Great Tasmanian Tasmanian Ride down the East Coast of Tasmania.
A far cry from our "long" 5 km rides. We've been riding about 6 years now.
I have built a number of bikes. Two Bentechs. One for self and one for a friend as well as four Toureasy clones for some of our group who were having problems with their wedgies.
Some people say home made bents are no good but my comparisons show the ones I built are just as good as commercial offerings but then I'm biased. :)
In my readings on this forum I have picked up a lot of good information thanks to all the knowledgeable posters.
Now I've made the leap to post here I hope you will be able to put up with me.
Regards to all

Welcome John!
I admire people who build bikes. In the case of recumbents, I see all of these home-built models around the Internet, where people even build the frames out of metal tubes. Very interesting little cottage industry.

Oh my a principal....flash backs from school....I did not recognize ANY of the bikes you mentioned...but that is more my ignorance than anything.....
Welcome and I am glad you ride a bike....that is all that really counts in my book...
G'day John. Glad to see another Aussie here to help keep this mob in line :D

Hi DG,
'fraid it's not white.
Trike is dark Blue, Bentech is Yellow, TE Clone is purple and the Cypress is silver.
Guess I must be colourblind. :D

Welcome and glad you're no longer a lurker.
Welcome John. Was a lurker myself until one day, I found the urge to share my bike experience. You're in good company, you probably know that before your first post. The group need pics of your bike.

Buzz off.
I didn't mean that, but the other responses were getting a bit too predictable.
Nice shirt.

Hmmm ... I kinda like John's idea. Perhaps we should start a new 50+ tradition - only one set of tires per bike. When the tires wear out, it is new bike time!

Welcome John! always happy to have new folks post and to hear of new perspectives. I think that's one of the real assets of a 50+ forum, we all have been around long enough to be way more tolerant of other opinions, and to appreciate the differences of folks that make up the world.

I don't know about everyone else, but I think I have been following that rule for years. Actually, the last bike I sold still had plenty of rubber on it.

I like that idea. I think I need to replace the tire on the front of the Madone. I saw a small slit in it this morning.

Welcome to the asylum.
My older brother is also named John and is a school principal but has not retired yet. I, on the other hand, having spent a good deal of my school years sitting in the principals office, decided to go into another line of work.
Please do post some photos of your home made recumbents

Can I look for roads with lots of broken glass on them? Or won't it be compulsory to completely wear a tyre out (I'm not sure I can wait that long)

Big Paulie, you're like a human google! You're a biological search engine!
Between you and Tom Bombadil, I feel like I have access to all the facts and esoterica of the universe.
John, what color is your bike?
Hey DG, he's from Australia .. which is almost English. You've gotta spell it COLOUR so he'll understand. Or are you trolling so he'll ask what colour yours is???:D

Hey Richard,
Thought you must have worn your ttires down already so you would have an excuse for the new bent you are ordering.
Seriously though, Thanks to everyone for the welcome to the group.
I'll get some pictures up when I figure it out. Seems they need to be 100kb or less for attachments.
Perhaps someone can wise me up as to how to do them.
