I have a XT crank that uses the hollowtech design. I went to pull the crank arms and my crank puller does not work with this design. The spindle on the puller goes through the hollow bottom bracket. Do I need a different tool or am I missing something?

They do make a tool for it....

You have a splined crank, so you need a splined crank puller which is difference than the square crank puller. It costs about $15

Thanks. I figured it was something like that. Someone had suggested they were self extracting, but I could not see how that was possible since the bolt could only be screwed in from one direction.

You can get a "105 tool", this will give your old tool something to push against.
Be sure to remove the thin washer. It may have come out with the bolt but is more likely still in the crank.
The XT will self extract. Remove the crank bolt with the dust cover in place. The bolt flange pushes against the dust cover and pulls the crank off. If you decide to do it this way, remove the dustcover and grease everything first. Then reinstall it and remove the crank. When you reinstall the crank take the dustcover off so you can see what is going on when you try to align the splines. Misalignment will screw up your crank. Be sure to put the thin washer back in or you will screw up the crank. Grease the splines before you put it back together.

Thanks Chuck, that will save me from having to buy a new tool.

Nothing if you need them.
