Wow, 49 bids, well over 2 days to go, $3600 so far, the reserve hasn't been met, and the frame has had a major repair. That's nuts.

FWIW, my first decent mountain bike was a '90 RaleighUSA. I literally wore that bike out, top to bottom. I'd take $5 for it-:D

100-200 miles of use - then it got a cracked chainstay...

The original XTR parts make the new ones look like crap, IMO. I remember when the first version of that bike came out and it was like $6500 new. :o

Why would you want a lighter bike for downhill cycling? I'd be loading that baby up with lead.

In the early 90s suddenly lightweight stuff was available and racers used it indiscriminately, even for DH. After some spectacular failures, particularly of handlebars, folks wised up.

Soon no one was using an adapted XC bike for DH, leading to the 40+ lb monsters we see today.

The Tomac is one of the holy grails of vintage mountain bikes, rare as hell, and because of that many folks would fork out huge sums to own one.

To each his own I guess. I have a mountain bike, a 1999 Marin Alpine Trail that I've upgraded over the years but it's just a tool to get me up and down the mountain trails and something to use when my riding partners want to go mountain biking. I don't look at it in the same light as a road bike and certainly would not care about a vintage mountain bike. I need every advantage I can get off road and even the Marin is getting a bit long in the tooth. Probably because mountain bikes didn't exist in my formative years they don't carry that same tinge of nostalgia. I never even thought if one until I moved to Colorado.
