i'm stoked. although i slept on pre-registering, hope there's spots left. i emailed the organizer to make sure.

we'll have a good few members of team bike rack there.

dirtyphotons

just received confirmation that there are spots left in the men's cat iv race.

*new*guy

me me me!

i'll be in the masters race at 11. you'll know me by the squealing of my front brake.... oh wait, that's not really a distinction at a cross race;)

Lithuania

how many single speeders do you think will be there?

ill be the dummy on the san jose with a beard in the 4 race

dirtyphotons

also a dummy, also on a singlespeed also will have a beard in the 4 race (you aren't riskus as well, are you?)

heading out now to ride the course, i'll post a description if i can later.

I'll be there.
C race. black surly SS. proteus jersey

ok, course report.

it's dry. it sprinkled a little bit while we were riding and there was some dew on the grass but i'd expect a fast course with very little mud.

i'll use this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXVLtg8wYBk) for reference.

the run up is not steep at all. according to vpower, the way they make you run is to put a hurdle at the bottom of it.

this course has several turnarounds. one of them is a the top of a hill, and you hop over a wooden barrier (about 18 inches tall) then around a tree and back over the barrier. you can see it at the 45 second mark in the video. those guys are hopping right over it, but i'm short so i was actually stepping on it and then over, like the kid in the ncvc jersey a bit later. it's about ten inches deep, so watch your shins if you jump it and it's old and wood, so it'll get slippery if it gets wet at all.

the sand pit is just two volleyball courts. you get a really good look at it at 2:55 in the video. there's a hairpin turn in the middle of one court so it seems like you'll have to dismout forthat. the sand itself is deep in the middle but actually ridable (although the sounds my bike made after i rode through were not happy sounds).

and then there's one hairpin turn down by the road that goes straight down and up a short but steep hill. still not sure if i'm gonna ride or run it, we'll see how the tape is laid out.

getting there wasn't too bad. the directions on the flyer kind of suck because they tell you how to get there from the north side of the baltimore beltway.

google maps took me up the bw parkway and then up a few one way streets to get to the park. not a bad route, but you can't go back the same way.

from the bw parkway:

Continue on N Paca St 0.2 mi

Slight left to stay on N Paca St 75 ft

Continue on Mcculloh St 2.0 mi

Turn right at Gwynns Falls Pkwy 135 ft

Sharp right at Pimlico Dr 0.3 mi

Turn left at Swann Dr 0.2 mi

Turn left at Mansion House Rd 0.3 mi

google maps/directions call mansion house road duck pond dr, but i promise you the sign says mansion house. park on the side of the road (not the grass) and you should see registration.

to get back i actually went out the other side of the park and kludged my way back to 95. but from this map (http://http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=druid+hill+park+&sll=39.120472,-76.81366&sspn=0.474111,1.167297&ie=UTF8&ll=39.302358,-76.621399&spn=0.029556,0.072956&z=14&om=1) it seems like the better way would be to take druid hill ave. (one way, parallel to mculloh) to a right on mlk, then there's an exit for russell street. then right on paca, and that'll turn into the bw parkway south.

Lithuania

thanks for the report

I'll be there tommorow for my first CX race ever, and my first bike race in 15 years. I'll be in the Men's beginners/C-class/Cat IV, or whatever they call it. Either way, it's the field that goes off at 10:00 AM. Be sure to cheer for the guy on the blue and grey Cannondale CX with the brown Cinelli cork ribbon on the handlebars.

*new*guy

man, that was fun.

I saw Lithuania there on his San Jose. Nice job, dude.

I wrote a race report here (http://doctorvondoctorstein.blogspot.com/2007/09/charm-city-cx-race-masters-34.html)

dirtyphotons

^ah, it's nice to put bf faces to dcfixed faces (i'm john on there)

i had a great time, picked off a few guys who i probably shouldn't have and even surprised myself a little. looks like they're only posting the top 20 which i didn't crack but i was pretty pleased with my race.

it definitely felt like a friendlier scene than road racing and i'm looking forward to my next one.

ah you spotted me near peak suffering.

great report too. I loved that guy in the skeleton suit. I wonder where you get something like that.

Lithuania

same here. You guys have some pretty cool kits too.

same here. You guys have some pretty cool kits too.

yeah i like em a lot. unfortunately we have to buy em, but i'm trying to get em at cost for the team at least.

see you out soon.

Ghostman

They goofed up the results in the Men's C race. I was listed as 59th but I crossed the line ahead of my teammate (who they have as 11th) and ahead of a bunch of othet guys I know who theyt listed in the 30's and 40's. Irritating.

Anyway, I rode behind a guy with a BikeRackDC jersey and finished maybe two or three places behind him.

Was that you dirtyy photons? Who did you guys have in the C race wearing the kit and where did they finish?

Thanks.

Lithuania

where did you see results posted that deep?

dirtyphotons

coulda been me, we were all in the cat iv race. i did the best of my team, and still was probably around 30th. what team/bike were you on?

i'd also like to know how i placed. don't think i was top 20 but i feel like i did pretty well.

oh, and here's a good one

http://k43.pbase.com/o6/37/41837/1/86096765.qR8Acbgx.091850_7703.JPG

Ghostman

They posted them originally at the race. But they were a joke and generated many complaints, so then they only posted top 20. The guy in the Coppi jersey behind Riskus was listed as finishing 11th I think. Initially they listed him as 14th and then they kept changing it.

I was ahead of this entire pack in the picture and I finished 59th...

Funny....

Lithuania

dirtyphotons and ghostman, you must have finished very close to each other because I was around both you guys with about 2 laps to go when I started to fade and I saw you together from a distance.

dirtyphotons

ghostman, this isn't you behind my bulbous gut is it?

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1057/1429776545_3cb447fba8.jpg

edit: and yes, my jersey is tucked into my shorts. it's how i roll (not really).

Lithuania

yep thats him

know i just need to figure out how to steal that bike

Lithuania

i so want that skeleton skinsuit and I found a place to buy it. It would make my terrible glasses look even worse!

Apparently that dude w/ the skeleton skinsuit owns a bike shop and is a local SS MTB'r so you'd be in good company :)

Lithuania

what shop? I dont want to be biting his style.

*new*guy

what shop? I dont want to be biting his style.

one of the race promoters left this on my blog....

"The skeleton skinsuit dude is Jonathan, a local singlespeed mountain biker and owner of Family Bike Shop in Crofton...great guy."

Lithuania

cool. that guy definitely ruled in my book.

I rode the C race and had my best finish ever, placing 13th on the results posted at the race. I know this is correct because I was fighting for top 10 before crashing coming up the asphalt finishing hill (arrgghh). On the top 20 posted at the C3 Web site this morning my name doesn't appear (double arrgggghh). E-mailed the race promoter and he said they were still sorting out results but couldn't guarantee anything. I feel great about the race but it sort of sucks when you tell people, they look at the result page and say "yeah right ... I don't see your name."

Lithuania

what was the story on the crash?

Schiek

I was following wheels of two guys knowing I had been a bit more powerful than them on each climb. Figured I would bide my time on the bell lap until the asphalt hill and then take my chances sprinting it and the finishing straight. Got a little too excited making the turn anticipating the hard effort I planned, and next thing I knew my handlebars were where my tires should have been. Really stupid move that was solely the result of my over-exuberance. Thankfully I didn't take anybody with me. One guy passed me while I was on the deck but I was able to get up and still finish strong. Really fun race. Despite the 11th hour crash and effed up results. And as a bonus I got some good souvenirs on my hand/knee/shoulder to show off at work.

I ride an old neon green Redline Conquest with clashing orange handlebar tape and not-even-close-to-matching mango chris king headset. Although I'm not sure how much that stands out in a field of 100.

Cool to see you're racing, Schiek. Are you going to do Ed Sander next weekend?

Hey New Guy. The Ed Sander race is up in the air for me. Wife is expecting baby any second now so I will happily miss that one.

Really looking forward to the DC CX. I live in Brookland (NE DC) and will be able to do my race warm up riding to the venue. How sweet is that?

really bummed i can't do this one. i also live near brookland and it would be great to race in my neighborhood. unfortunately, it's the same day as the marine corps marathon. i'll definitely stop by on the way home and check it out.

I will be there with sparkles.

That's me alright. Briefly leading you before you passed me again and made it stick.

I was stalking you the rest of the race because we were riding about the same pace I think. You guys have great kit.

I think we were top 30. That's my story and I am sticking to it.

New Guy: Cool race report, cool blog. See you at some cross races in the future. I'll be the old guy with the fly Kona and sweet wheels, gettin' my ass kicked....

I can see why you and Lithuania/Riskus could see eye to eye on some things. He's got a little of that skate punk/hardcore vibe going too...

BTW, the rasputin guy, Jonathan, is a great dude. He owns his own shop in Crofton and they do Saturday rides mountain, cross, single speed or whatever. Nice bunch of dudes.

I so want your wheels. I think i'm going to use my road "race" wheels this coming weekend since i plan to build new ones over the winter anyway. low spoke count be damned!

Lithuania

I too need new wheels. perhaps a nice set of single speed tubulars. need to learn more about the pros and cons first.

Very good racing with you all. I hope to race with you all again soon. This weekend I am riding the MS150 (Philly to Ocean City, NJ and back) so I won't be at Ed Sander, but maybe on the 6th I'll be at Antietam Cross in Hagerstown. I definitely plan on racing DCCX.

This past weekend was my first cross race. It made me realize that I need to work on endurance riding.

Congragulation Schiek on your upcoming baby, I hope all goes well. I was also racing at Charm City this Sunday, my first CX race ever, and my wife was there cheering me all of the way. She's expecting in mid-January, so were squeezing in as much 'cross as we can now before Junior arrives. Maybe one day my kid will be racing your kid in the Lil' Belgians race, G-d willing!

I was there, BTW, with the Bike Rack guys, but I didn't buy my kit yet. I'll have it before the end of the season. If you look at DirtyPhotons photo from the first page, you'll see me in grey between a Bike Rack guy and the guy in the pink and white Fat Chance jersey. I finished somewhere in the last quarter of the Men's C field, but I still haven't gotten the result. Either way, the race was brutally painful and brutally fun, and I can't wait to do it again at the Ed Sander CX.

Sorry 'bout that. It was my wife's first time ever at a bike race, and she was mainly at the start/finish area to help me out before and after the race, and stayed there since it was shady and out of the sun for her and didn't want to move around too much. Once she made it back to our car, she was tired and all she wanted to do was get home, eat, and rest. Thanks for bringing extra food, though, we appreciate the sentiment and will spend more time with you guys at the next race.

This time of the year is hard for me to get any training in with all of the Jewish holidays. Between Rosh HaShana, Yom Kippur, and Succot, it's basically four weeks dedicated to the holidays, but once they're over, it's back onto the bike. I would love to be at UMD tonight, but it's the first night of Succot. As it was, I did Charm City the day after yom Kippur (fasting for 24 hours) and Succot is keeping me from training this week, so I'm looking to just hang on at the Ed Sander CX.
