Does anyone have any recommendations for a good cycling subscription. I really want to have a good source for diet and training tips. Need to get in shapr fast for a ride in March in CA.

Any suggestions would be great!

Hi Bumpdog,

For a good, general duty, magazine, I like Bicycling. It covers a wide range of cycling and has fairly good articles.

Even more than a magazine, I'd suggest reading these forums and visiting other cycling sites. The amount of info you can pick up is amazing.

Personally, I like Bicycling. You can check out their website, www.bicycling.com. Others include CycleSports www.cyclesports.com, and Bike www.bikemag.com.

Hi,
March? You have over 6 months. Use a good training program, and be religous about it. You can improve a lot in 6 months.

I too like Bicycling but I have to admit that they have gotten rather thin lately. It used to be I could not finish an entire issue cover-to-cover (including reading all the ads) on a single flight from San Jose back up to Seattle.

I second that- I used to love going through the magazine from cover to cover. But over time, the subject matter definitely changed, and that turned me off big time. Almost nothing about roadies like they used to have... it was mostly mountain biking and stuff like that. So if you're all for the mtb, it's good for you!

I now get VeloNews, and I'm luvin' it!

Here's the reason I stay away from bicycling magazines - they give me upgrade-itis!

Seriously, I try not to read the mags on biking, golfing, etc etc ... too many ads and stuff and I always end up seeing things I "need" .... my preference is to get my info at forums like this as much as possible.

Well I'm also into mountain biking but the problem is that the magazine is pretty pricey for what you get these days. I mean $5.95 (okay, I could subscribe I guess but still...) for mostly ads and not enough articles about either road or mountain biking. every once in a while I'll see something covered in depth and then I'll actually buy an issue. Unfortunately a lot of other mags aren't much better. I agree that VeloNews is pretty decent however.

Not exactly. I won't even be able to get on a bike for another 4-5 weeks or so. Just had reconstructive ACL surgery on 7/28. Going through rehab right now but who knows when I'll be back.

Well, I can't really recommend a good cycling magazine. When I was a newbie, I use to scour them. Now, they all seemed filled with an endless amount of ads and a few articles in between. Lots of hype.

I may have to take your suggestion Koffee and check out Velo News.

Velonews is ok for racing news but honestly for me it
has too much MTB stuff. I just don't care all that much about
NORBA, etc. and it seems like more time is devoted to
MTB parts in the tech column.

I miss Bicycle Guide, it was a real road snob magazine.
that said I am VERY impressed with Asphalt magazine.
Some training articles, some touring articles and
100% roadie, not a MTB to be found in the first 2 issues.

Check out the first 2 issues here:
Asphalt Magazine (http://www.asphaltmag.com/index.htm)

Get VeloNews, well written and substantial articles, its a little expensive though, usually over 1.25 for an issue if done by subscription, but well worth it.

For those of you dissatisfied with Bicycling mag(myself included), a very good general purpose cycling mag is Cycling Plus, from the UK. What a huge difference in content. They also have a forum. www.cyclingplus.co.uk .

You can subscribe to their mag from the forum.

If you DO sub to Bicycling, be aware that the "free" trial issues aren't free is you subscribe. They charge you for them retroactively. When I e-mailed about this, the customer reps said "2 free isuues + 9 more for $12.97" and when I asked for the regular 11-month price, they said "$12.97". When I asked where the two free issues went, I got an impersonal e-mail back that said, literally, "2 free isuues + 9 more for $12.97". They never would give me a straight answer and quietly deleted my trial sub before I even got the 1st issue. Guess they'll never get my "$12.95". Morons.

i was taking a gander at the asphalt mag and thought it would be who if me to look at the price. Its only 4 issues a year and almost $10 an issue. I read the articles and they sure looked nice, but is it worth the price?

I have the same reservations when I looked at it. I must say that I got warm-fuzzies with the first issue having a nice review of my Aegis but I didn't think it was enough to pay twice the price per issue for a magazine that released a third as often as most other cycling magazines.

I don't know, is it worth it is up to you.
My feeling is that as subscription numbers go up the
price should drop.
Right now its a pretty small magazine, distribution wise.
Yes its expensive, however it is the only purely road magazine
in the U.S. (not counting small local stuff), and if it takes me
spending 10 bucks an issue to help keep it going then its
worth it.
There is more to the magazine than what you can get
from the web site. Good article on bike fit in first issue.

Hi,
think of the leg as being like the arm. The two main isolation exercises on the arm are the tricep press and the curl. For the leg, it's called the leg extension, and the leg curl has a variety of names. I like the seated devices for the leg curl. Your therapist can do a better job at this than I can; but you can progress further and quicker if you learn what is going on.
It's far too easy to use the glutes in the prone position, when doing the leg curl;and not even be aware of it. I was doing 90 pounds prone one year, and sat down at a seated curl device, and got a cramp at 35 pounds. Embarassing. Since you have had a knee injury, forget lunges entirely. Btw, when you are doing leg extensions, when done do a set of 10 (or close to it) using only the upper third of the exercise. That works a tear drop shaped muscle called the vastus medialus, next to the knee that stabilises the knee. This will help a LOT.You can try other machines and exercises but don't bend the knee more than about halfway. It won't take long to find your limitations once you start adding a few pounds. I find calf exercises to be good for the knee. When you start on an exercycle, take it easy for 2 or 3 weeks, work on your spin.

Late did you post this in the correct thread, or do you need me to move it or something? This seems kind of out of the blue for someone looking for advice for a cycling magazine....

If it belongs here, my apologies for butting in.

Bumpdog had knee surgery, he mentioned it in the middle of the thread. Prob could use it's own thread tho.

I've become a fan of Procycling of late. Nothing on recreational riding whatsoever (other than Chris Boardman's honest, off the cuff road tests), but the information regarding the pro peloton is unequalled by any other rag, Velonews included.

Besides, unless you're seeking Bathreading material, you can get better, more often updated and personalized information on forums such as this.
