You bought them from somebody from weightweenies.com?

Drillium

a crazy way to trim a few grams off your bike weight

I think it might have been sort of DIY

I have a set of brake levers that are drilled out... I can hear the wind whistling there, giving me .00235 extra miles per hour back to my commute

I remember when this was all the rage in the mid 70's. But you have to do a slight countersink on all those holes or the chain rings will stress crack.

I just like the look of drilled chainrings on a bike, trust me, I am in no way a weightweenie! :roflmao:

+1 ... I've got a set of from-the-factory Sugino drillium rings.

But it gets worse:

I'd like to put one of these on my Px10! I'd feel better about bidding on it if someone could tell me the correct BB spindle length for them!

I have seen them on a Zeus from that era (early/mid 70's) too. In fact most of the hard core racers of that era tried drilling stuff...at least once:D

Those look like Stronglights. A 122mm BCD would clinch the identity.

My 1980 Peugeot PKN-10E came with factory-drilled Stronglight 52-42 chainrings.

Dirtdrop,
I am putting a Stronglight 99bis 'drillium' triple crankset (52/48/36) on my Peugeot UE8 (I had other plans for the bike, but changed my mind). I currently have a TA 116.5 mm spindle made for a double and may have to switch to a TA 120 or 123.5 mm made for a triple. Sheldon Brown suggested I first try the double spindle before purchasing a replacement. I am planning to use the original Simplex Prestige front derailleur and see how it goes. Sheldon also suggested I read his chainline article http://www.sheldonbrown.com/chainline.html. If you want to wait, I will let you know how it works out for me in a week or two. The triple on EBay that you are looking at is one of the nicest I have seen.
Cheers,

The Peugeot catalogs that I have show the drillium chainrings being used in the late 70s to early 80s. The Wannado Peugeot Show (http://home.wanadoo.nl/peugeotshow/) shows them as early as 1977. I am curious to know when Stronglight first produced these.

Those rings are NOT for a Stronglight 93 or 99. They are for a Sugino GT or similar, bolt circle diameter 110mm. I have them on my Nishiki International, though they were originally on a Nishiki Continental that I have since sold.

Good point, I apparently overlooked that companies other than Stronglight could be drilling chainrings. I am still curious to know when Stronglight began drilling their chainrings.

Cheers,

That's the kind of first-hand experience I was hoping for. Somebody sold off some French thread Stronglight bottom brackets made for triples on eBay about a month ago. I wish I had bought one!

I think you'll be asking too much of that Prestige FD!

Please let me know how it comes out.

According to one of Sheldon's articles, a double derailleur coupled with a 52/48/36T chainring combination should work best. I think that's the idea between the small drop between the two outer rings. I will let you know how it works out. I can always convert the crankset to a 48/36T double if it does not shift well as a triple.

That's a double though right? I thought I read somewhere to just add 5mm on the driveside to convert to a triple, although if twsindypa says Sheldon recommended trying the original spindle before buying a new one that sounds pretty reasonable to me.
