Northeast - Another Bike Rack Bike Theft

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
It's Friday night, 12:48 am, and the police are downstairs talking to some unfortunate cyclist who had his bike stolen from one of the DOT bike racks. Seems the thief cut right though both legs of the rack! Sure it's dark out but this is a well traveled residential block in the Village just north of Houston Street. You'd think someone might have noticed.
only an idiot would leave a bike on their rack unattended.

An idiot?
Where would you have us park? Or perhaps you have a companion who guards your bike whenever you're forced to, oh, work?
Companion, fig. 1

That sucks!
If you park your bike on the street a lot it is a good idea to register your bike with the NYPD and to have them etch a serial number on your bike. Most local precincts (including the one in Central Park) can do it for you.
That way if they ever catch the bicycle thief they can prosecute him and you can get your bike back.
