So I have never rode with any one on here for one of their group rides but I really just like to leave my house to go ride on the road than drive somewhere to ride. So I want to do the Palomar ride that was featured in bicycling mag that floyd does. I want to do it on my birthday and was looking for something somewhat challanging. I usually do a long ride for my birthday. Well I decided palomar mt. this year and I figure I could use a group to help pull on the flats on the way to the mountain and on the way back. Just trying to get a feel for if anyone is up for it. I know it is the thanksgiving weekend. So basically it is start in temecula at the 79 and pechanga parkway to the 76 to palomar and back on the 76 to rice canyon. So who would be up for this?

I'm sure people will be up for riding up Palomar that weekend, but not necessarily along that route.

Supposedly, I'm going to be planning our Apple Pie ride for Nov 24, starting in Valley Center and up to Palomar. (And then circling around through Santa Ysabel, Ramona, and Escondido.) But I wouldn't be opposed to doing something else that day.

I'll join up for at least a partial ride. If you're starting in Temecula maybe meet up in Fallbrook or near the Chevron station at 76 & 15.

Count me in! It'll be the first group ride I've done, but I'm more intimidated by those hills than meeting new people; time to start training! :)

that would be a SCARY weekend to ride the small shoulders of 79 and 76. Desert time so ALOT of RV's towing their toys. If you guys are coming in the from the 7, I'll start at Harrah's. RV mirrors and tall riders don't mix. I've had my head buzzed way too many times to put myself in that position again.

Sure isn't going to be tour de estrogen, that's for certain. What happened to the "easy" pie ride? :o

Define "easy".

Easy
adj. eas·i·er, eas·i·est
1. Capable of being accomplished or acquired with ease; posing no difficulty.
2. Requiring or exhibiting little effort or endeavor; undemanding.
3. Any ride that isn't similar to the ride description posted in this thread.
4. Any resident hooker in Mobile, Alabama.

You mean when aprilm rides selected scenic portions and jschen drives SAG and feeds her apple pie? Hopefully October 16.

Um...J...that would be your "special pie ride" darling, and not the annual one. NOT that there's anything wrong with that, I'm just making sure we are all on the same page, if you will.

Oh, you mean the 1.8 mile (vertical) ride on Thanksgiving Saturday? I'm happy to organize, but if lots of people want to do a different ride, I won't organize a competing ride. There's plenty of other opportunities for that ride.

It may be that there is no easy Pie Ride, because as I understand it the Pie ride involves climbing Palomar and Mesa Grande. The original route is a 100+ mile century that also includes the Lake Wohlford climb near mile 99. The modified Pie Ride we are doing on 9/30 is a 70 mile semi-loop that skips Lake Wohlford and Ramona. Doable? Most certainly. Easy? Not so much.

That is unless you just want jschen to shuttle you to the pie shop. That would be easy.

Oh for cry eye, people, I'm KIDDING. I will probably struggle on the regular Pie Ride and I was just making a point that there is no way in hell that I could keep up on the one the OP is suggesting (although, I'm thrilled he's planning it as it's a new guy! We welcome those :D). However, I'm just wondering that if Thanksgiving weekend is now going to be this ride in lieu of the regular Pie Ride, is there going to be a regular Pie Ride?

Sheesh...I'm not looking for an "easy" ride!:p

At the moment, I still plan on running the Pie ride as long as there's sufficient interest to justify the effort. I haven't decided whether I'd rather ride it or drive SAG this year, though. Riding it is such hard work, and I've fought the ride to a 2 win, 2 loss tie.

1st ride: completed 100 miles, but didn't ride to the finish (a tough loss)
2nd ride: completed entire ride solo, despite falling over 1.5 miles from finish (a close win)
3rd ride: last year's Thanksgiving ride, great time (easy win)
4th ride: threw in the towel at about 8000 feet of climbing and about 65 miles (not even close)

My Pie Lite record is a bit better.

1st ride: 80 miles, 9000 feet of climbing
2nd ride: 85 miles, 11000 feet of climbing

I'm not really sure why it's called Pie Lite since in many respects, it's as hard as the Thanksgiving edition of the Pie ride (98 miles, 9500 feet of climbing), if not harder (when returning via Mesa Grande and East Grade).

Does anyone have any information on the route we're going to take? There seems to be a lot of Palomar ride routes. Like overall distance/guess of elevation?

I have been scouring the Bicycling website to find the route profile (with no luck), but I might have to break down and search through my magazines...

If we leave it as the Tour de Drugs then everyone can choose their own poison...

estrogen is linked to 'pie' through women, and we need more women on this route!!! so come and join us!

(The OP's ride)From 79 & Pechanga Parkway, you'll have a nice mostly downhill to the 76 where you'll end up at the Pala Casino. At least it looks nice. My wife made me promise to never ride a bike on it since it's so narrow.

Then you'll take 76 east about 10 miles to Rincon Rd. where the climbing starts. I think it's 12 miles or so from Rincon Rd to the Palomar general store. So figure on 22-25 plus whatever the distance is from Pala to Pechanga each way.

Floyd Landis's 5-Figure Elevation Gainer
Age: 30
Hometown: Temecula, California
Team: Phonak
Credentials: Ninth in 2005 Tour de France; won 2006 Tour of California and Paris-Nice
My favorite ride is Palomar Mountain--it has a good road and is one of the longest climbs in the area," says America's soft-spoken stage-race hope, who averages 300-350 watts on the loop.
The 100-mile ride packs in about 10,000 feet of climbing, first in the drier, desert-like lower elevations and then in the more alpine--think Douglas and white fir and yellow pine--environs of California's Palomar Mountain State Park, which averages 5,000 feet of elevation. A good portion of the climbing comes on the 12-mile ascent to the high point of the state park. Halfway up the climb, you turn onto South Grade Road, which throws Alpe d'Huez-quality switchbacks at you en route to the summit. Landis says on weekdays you won't see much of anyone on the climb, but on weekends you should watch out for motorcyclists, who are fond of the road. Once you reach the summit, you're rewarded with views of the surrounding mountains, and on clear days you can see all the way to the _Pacific. Before the big descent down the east side of the mountain and the return to Landis's hometown of Temecula, refuel at Mother's Kitchen. "I usually stop there and get a muffin and fill up my water bottles," Landis says. "You could get a bowl of homemade chili if you want--but that'd probably be a bad idea."

The Ride: Temecula-Palomar Mountain Loop
Distance: 100 miles
Landis's Time: 4 hours
Directions:
Depart from intersection of Rt. 79 and Pechanga Parkway, heading southeast on Pechanga
Veer RIGHT on Pala Rd.
LEFT when Pala Rd. Ts onto Pala Mission Rd.
Road name changes from Pala Mission Rd. to Rt. 76
Continue on Rt. 76 East/Southeast about 15 miles
Veer LEFT on County Rd. S6/South Grade Rd.
RIGHT out of the parking lot at Mother's Kitchen onto County Rd. S7/East Grade Rd.
RIGHT on Rt. 76 near Lake Henshaw
Continue on Rt. 76 (do not turn right on Pala Mission Rd.)
RIGHT on Rice Canyon Rd.
LEFT on Rainbow Valley Blvd.
RIGHT on Old Hwy. 395/Rainbow Canyon Rd.
LEFT on Pala Rd.
LEFT on Pechanga Parkway to starting point
