I've figured out by trial and error the size that I need for a clamp-on derailleur. What advantages do the braze-on models give? Do you just have to have the braze-on mounts where the bottle cage mounts in order to utilize a braze-on?

Well,
you actually need a tab brazed onto the frame specifically for the deraileur, bottle cage holes won't cut it.
generally, if the frame came with the tab, you use a braze on, otherwise use the clamp.
take care,
Jester
Braze or glue-ons are used by manufacturers who end up with non standard
seat tubes, or no seat tubes on some bikes. Clamp ons are made for 1", 1 1/8"
and 1 1/4" circular tubing. If anything else is used such as Trek OCLV, Litespeed bizarro angular tubing or oval aero tubing then a variant of the brazeon, or glueon for carbon, is used to mount the derailleur. Steve
