Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. other than tying a big thick Rottweiler to your bike whats the best lock or other theft deterrent(sp) system to protect your bike and its quickly removable parts? A thief with a set of bolt cutters can make short work of most locks or chains, is there an answer to this problem thats plagued cyclists since time im-memoral? My idea would be something like a lock with an electric charge producing enough current to simulate an electric fence shock if tampered with. I don't think it would fly with the authorities though;)

haha..that'd be one crazy ass lock...
if i was locking up my bike next to yours, and slightly touched it, i would be toast, and someone would be gone with my bike while my hair was all frizzy and...(add gory details here) etc..

I bought an On-Guard Lock. http://www.onguardlock.com/getProd.asp?sku=45004786
So far I haven't used it yet. Hopefully i won't have too.

Hi Devil Dog,

There's a reason that most "insurance" that comes with a new lock doesn't cover loss in NYC--most locks can be defeated with ease. The few U locks that are rated for use in the highest crime areas are very heavy, have a small locking area, and require you to use them exactly correctly. Even then, unless you strip every accessory off the bike, you may come back to a stripped frame.

All that to say, if I -had- to leave my bike unattended in an area like yours, I'd go for something like Kryptonite New York 3000 Lock. It is pricey and heavy, but the maker has enough confidence to warrant it in your home town.

This is the lock you want, The New York Fahgettaboudit lock from Kryptonite. You dont even have to ask, it is heavy and exspensive. Then you need to find something strong to lock it to.

All bikes weigh 40 pounds, If you ride a department store bike that weighs 39 pounds you only need a one pound lock. But if you ride a 17 pound bike your going to need a 23 pound lock to keep it :)

As far as the small parts, if you can remove it without tools, so can they take it with you.

Man..that's how bad it is in New York? I'm scared to lock my new Giant bike up at Univ. at Waterloo, and you guys have no lock that can protect against in NY.

Std practice is to leave a heavy duty lock at your daily lockup site, and use a smaller carry lock for the journey.
