I was playing around with my numbers tonight, and found something interesting.

In 2005, when I started, I rode for seven months (June-December) averaging 194 miles per month.

In 2006, I averaged only 183 miles per month, a decrease of 6%.

Thus far in 2007, I'm averaging only 163 miles per month, a decrease of 11% from last year, and 16% from 2005.

What's odd is that I feel like I'm riding FAR more than before, longer and more miles per month. If the numbers weren't there on bikejournal.com I'd have bet the farm I was riding longer and more this year than last.

At this rate, I'll be down to 50 miles a month pretty soon! :D

I keep track of # of rides a month which has stayed the same +/- since I have started.
My rides longer than 20 miles have increased with time. My increase in miles comes from going on longer rides.

So you averaged 194 a month on the mountain bike, but only 163 on the Roubaix?

Hard to believe.

And you are averaging only 40 miles per week this year?

I just remembered I was off bikes for seven weeks back in Freduary or so, because of my knee. I feel better now. For instance, I had only 33 miles in Freduary.

As I see it, the only way to increase your mileage is to sell the bikes. :D

Or sell the Roubaix and get a Wal-Mart Special.

Nah, you don't to sell something as horrible as Roubaix to some poor novice. GIVE it someone from the forum and they'll dispose of it appropriately, then buy a Wal-mar Special

Yeah, you can give the Roubaix to me, I'll gladly take it off your hands.................Oh hell I forgot....it's white.

Never mind. :p

I'm thinking that you are spending more time riding out in the country and less time on the beach bike paths watching the bikini babes. I can see why less riding might seem like more.

OK, 50% physical & 90% mental. The more DG knows about bicycling the less he rides, and the stronger DG gets the less he rides. So the solution to riding more is to not pay attention to what you are doing.

Oo the solution to riding more is to not pay attention to what you are doing.

Nah, just ignore DG :D

Is your time spent talking bikes on BF increasing proportionately?

There you have it...:D

Maybe it has something to do with age, ya think.

This sounds strangely like a story about the nations economy that I read lately. Less for more.

You know DG, I recently posted that we become better and stronger riders if we only ride once or twice a year and all you could do is give me crap about it. I'm glad that deep down you realized I was right.

A graph comparing mileage to BF posts would likely show an inverse relationship...nothing "confusing" about it.

DG - schedule a week-long cycling trip somewhere. It will motivate you to train more, and allow you to easily log 300+ miles in one week.

It's the white color. It has the effect of waving the white flag ... slowly influencing you to surrender to tired muscles, your hunger, nagging aches & pains, etc. It slowly drags your mileage down. You go out intending to do 50 miles and it whispers "Your knees are aching" or "You have family matters to tend to." And before you know it, you're hanging it up in the garage after 25 miles.

My grandma always said,
"figures lie and liars figure."
So, I bet you really are riding more

Your problem w/declining mileage is extremely simple if you observe with an open mind.....yours being, obviously, closed to the obvious.

You bought a white bike. The the time you formerly spent riding is now spent keeping your white bike clean.:D

Quality beats quantity any day. Doing 10 miles of intervals beats a simple 20 mile ride. Are you doing bettter quality miles?

I can say absolutely yes to this. For one thing, I now ride in the big ring almost exclusively, which I find astonishing. Anything less is too easy and doesn't work for me (not talking hills here).

Of course, this is just a theory. Not based on first hand knowledge...

Hey, I CAN stop anytime I want...:p

And soon after that, your mileage will go into the negatives, and you'll have to start riding backwards.

A good reminder for me that I've slipped and have not even entered any of mileage for the past several months. I couldn't tell you how many miles I've done this year or by month........quite a contrast from a couple years ago when I was keeping the ol' excel spreadsheet updated religiously. Since I got the Garmin I've lost the desire to keep my info up to date-I just look at the info on-line........

DG,

When people say "the big ring," they are referring to the front gears, not the back gears!

:D

Seriously, your progress is really great...along with so many others in this forum. :)
