I feel like there should be a dumb question forum or sticky, but for the life of me I can't figure out what is going on here. I took apart a '74 Schwinn Suburban (10-Speed) and I'm in the process of putting it back together. I've got everything sorted out fine, shifting is great EXCEPT for when I want to use the lowest gear while I'm on the larger chainring. The pulleys just decide to rotate up and touch the freewheel, which would totally launch me if I did this while riding. It's the same chain, I feel like it's gotten shorter. The wheel's practically on the edge of the dropouts now and I still can't keep the pulleys away!

Shorten the chain so that when the derailer pivots towards the smallest of the problem cogs, the upper wheel is already rearwards of the pivot point.

It is the same chain, if it was working before then it should work now. Maybe something else was not installed properly.

Is the wheel as far rearward in the dropout as it can go? The axle should be right up against the RD hanger. Best of luck.

Right now the derailleur and wheel are pushed as far back into the dropout as they'll go. As soon as I try for the largest cog on the freewheel, the derailleur tries to push chain up on to it, but it seems to run out of chain and everything just stops. The chain makes it most of the way onto it, but not quite.

I owe an apology to everyone. Hahaha, oh man am I dumb.

I figured it out! I did pick up a new set of wheels. The rear was sold as a '74 Continental rear, and I never bothered to count the teeth. It's got 32, not the 28 I need, meaning it's from a 5-speed! Crap, all that time I spent staring at it and all had to do was count. Now I have to go see if I can switch out the cassette. (I should've gone with you, Bob! I"ll never turn you down again!) At least I'm not going crazy.
