Route: Tour de Schools
Features: Mostly on secondary roads and residential streets. Have the opportunity to pass by 3 Elementary Schools, 2 Junior Highs, 1 High School, 1 Vocational Center, and the District Office. All schools belong to the Spartanburg County Schools District 7.
Mileage: 18.9mi by the map, 19.4mi by my trip computer
Average Speed: 10.0mi according to computer but I stopped frequently for pictures and read the map.
Maximum Speed: 27.8mph, little unbelievable for how fast I can go with a mountain bike.

The bike is a little ill-equiped as it has knobbies and quite heavy (about 30-32lbs setup) for road use. I didn't have a rack yet so I have to use a backpack which leads to one very sweaty situation.

Confession: I stopped for lunch about 14.4mi/19.4mi into the trip. It was about an hour break. I didn't intend to be this long but the sevices is sloooooooooow at the restaurant.

I bet the furniture they have to buy to accomodate heavier children, teenagers, and adults costs more.

OHHHHH!!!! you mean the school don't have bike racks. I thought you are talking about my bike not have a rear rack. I "think" there some in the back side of the school. Btw, that's a ritzy elementary school so probably not too many kids are riding to school.

Why must so many schools be designed to be a single story. It seems like such a waste of land having the building spread out so far. Then on top of that the parking lot is gigantic and also spread out.

It's easier to make them ADA compliant, I believe. I have to wonder sometimes if the cost of one elevator (and its repair) for folks who can't do stairs is greater than the cost of the repair and maintenance of a huge roof and the cost to heat/cool a sprawling structure. I honestly don't know.

Land for a single-story school has got to cost substantially more, too....

This is the Soooouth, land is dirt cheap. Maybe it's cheaper to build single story as well.

True, and remember school districts can use eminent domain to obtain land. They do have to pay for it, but it's generally pretty low rate.
