Hi So Cal BF Folk!

Just a little reminder that November 10th is the Planet Ultra Solvang's Finest Century - A Ride To Benefit Challenged Athletes Foundation.

It's a great ride for a wonderful cause.

Since 1994, CAF has raised more than $11 million – allowing the Foundation to satisfy thousands of funding requests from challenged athletes in all 50 states and dozens of countries. Eighty-two cents of every dollar raised by CAF provides funding, programs and a growing endowment fund that is getting challenged athletes into the game - and will continue to do so into the future. Whether it’s a $2,000 handcycle, helping underwrite a $15,000 running prosthetic or arranging enthusiastic encouragement from a mentor who has triumphed over a similar injury, CAF’s mission is clear: give those with the desire to live active, competitive lifestyles every opportunity to compete in the sports they love. At the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece, 45 of the 235 participating U.S. athletes (almost 20 percent) were supported by CAF. More recently at the 2006 Winter Paralympic Games in Torino, Itlay, CAF supported 23 of the 56 (41 percent) participating U.S. athletes.

Planet Ultra has raised over $25,000 so far this year for CAF - and we hope to do much more! Proceeds from the Solvang's Finest Century event will be donated directly to CAF!

Entry includes the finest route in the Solvang/Santa Ynez Valley, four fully stocked checkpoints, goodie bag, Planet Ultra water bottle, event t-shirt, and a post-ride buffet lunch.

Hope to see some of you in Solvang!
:-)

Wow. You gave us quite a scare with this post. I sure hope that isn't true. I found this on the web:

Sorry I ended up hijacking your thread. It truly is a very worthy cause you are supporting. If you ever need inspiration, go watch some of these athletes in action at an event like the San Diego Triathlon Challenge (put on by the CAF) end of October, which will feature many world-class challenged athletes.

Here is the story from signonsandiego.com:

Fire damages charity's office

The main office of the Challenged Athletes Foundation was charred by fire Saturday afternoon, causing an estimated $600,000 in damage, the San Diego fire department said.

The blaze burned the foundation office at 11199 Sorrento Valley Road. Fire officials pegged the losses at $200,000 in property and $400,000 in contents. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire had not been determined late Saturday.

The Foundation reportedly was stocking up goods for a fundraiser. Its Web site reports that the group has raised more than $11 million for athletes with a wide array of physical challenges since 1994.

Foundation officials could not immediately be reached for comment

This came from the TCSD mailing list:

Good morning,

I just spoke with Bob and it is pretty much a total loss. At this point they do not know what it is they really need, but as soon as I hear anything I will let you know.
