Hi, my friend owns a mongoose XR 100. Someone was using it and it fell just today. It fell on it's gear side, and the rear shifting arm might be bent in, but I'm not sure. I'm not even sure if it's called a shifting arm. Is 1 inch metal bar that extends from the wheel axle to support the arm supposed to be straight? Or might I try to aleviate the problem tensioning the shifting arm? I tried the latter, and it didn't seem to help much. The extent of the damage has made the shifting arm brush against the spokes, getting caught in them most of the time. I can't make out what's wrong because it looks alright, except the 1 inch metal bar seems a little warped in. On my bike it's straight. But that bar is extremely hard to bend! Any ideas?

That metal bar is the derailleur hanger and it is not supposed to be bent inwards. Unless you know exactly what you're doing, it's best to take it to your LBS and have them take a look. It needs to be re-aligned.

There is almost no other choice but to replace the der. The rear der. on this bike if the hanger for it is bent is part of the der. A competent LBS could get it close but you could replace it for what a LBS would charge to fix it.
