Advocacy & Safety - Chicago Area School District Bans Bicycling to School Citing Safety Hazards

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The Chicago Tribune reports that the Wauconda School Board banned bicycling to school at a third school in five years based on safety concerns. Story:

I don't know about the rest of you, but I rode to school from the first grade, lots of kids did it, I never felt unsafe, and it was never questioned or prevented by the school board. Could the safety hazard be all those parents driving their kids to schoolthese days? The article doesn't explore this issue at all...

It's already being discussed in this thread (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=34338).

I wouldn't have thought of looking for it under the heading General Discussion--this is really a safety and advocacy issue, isn't it? Any way, I found the link somewhere else and reposted it here without knowing about the previous post...

No worries. Yeah... I would have filed it under Safety and Advocacy too but there ya have it.

Either way, we don't need to have two threads of this topic on the board, so I'm closing this one. Feel free to discuss the issue in the thread linked above.
