Hmm, I was thinking of doing this on the ss mtn bike. Probably too hilly for that, right?

I rode it fixed last year and pretty much all the guys from BFSSFG had no problems w/ the hills. I just don't climb hills much so after riding 30 miles, the hills started wearing me down. You shouldn't have any problems.
I'm probably going to do the 25 this Year.

I'm doing this for the first time ..sign up for 40 and starting at the Botanical Garden.

I was a witness! jyo and I came to a fork in the road; to the left, a "shortcut"; to the right, the route. I made a tough-guy face, and we took the "real route." Which was an endless hill through Riverdale. I had gears, and I used them. This time, I might ride SS; and this time, I'm taking the shortcut.
It's not "endless".
I ride it every day.
:)
I bet not on a 48x16!
(At the end of 40 up-and-down miles, it seems more endless than you want.)
But I'm in. I loved that ride. Made me want to move to the Bronx. Or City Island at least.

Its called the D train.
I'm pretty sure I'm in - have a friend coming in from out of town. If that doesn't conflict than I'll be marshaling with Avatar. The rain date though I'm out of town.

Gonna give the 40 miler a shot.
It can't be harder than the Harlem Valley Tour where I did 55 miles of endless hills.

Ha. I did the 100 mile route on the HV ride. You missed out on ALOT more climbing. And a one mile+ uphill TT! :D

I can't await until I can do that. I'm new to this cycling biz.
Another year, maybe 2 and I'll be able to handle the century on the HV ride.

This sounds like a fun day. I may do this ride. How does the start work with the four different locations??? Also, are we gonna meet up as a group at one starting location?

i did the Bronx ride last year and i loved it. It was a fully supported ride. the roads were marked and it was just a great ride.

The different locations run feeder rides down to the Bronx County Courthouse where the TdB starts from.

Cool, thank you for that info.
Regged for the 40-miler. Anyone wanna meet up in Brooklyn around Prospect Park and ride up to the Bronx that morning?
EDIT: Err, So the Botanical Gardens checkin then rides to the Bronx, or takes the train?
Avatar and I are registered and starting from Riverdale.

The real start is at the county courthouse in the south Bronx near Yankee Stadium. The other starts are feeders to the courthouse, where you will end up waiting. It ends at the Botanic Gardens.
The NY Botanical Gardens is in the Bronx, it is NOT the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens.
It is a fun ride. I wouldn't count on going too fast on it, but there are places where you can take off.

That was the one thing that bothered me about the ride. It didn't end where it started. I had no idea how to get back to the Courthouse where my car was.
Okay, registered for the 25 Miler, hooking up at Riverdale's HHP.

Me and some friends will be starting at the Botanical Gardens - this will be our first time doing the Tour.

Going by last year's ride, the feeder routes weren't worth it, in my opinion. Unless you want to ride a very casual pace & get in a few extra miles & do some sightseeing.
I did the 50 mile start last year & it took us over an hour, after a late start and a glacial pace just to get to the Courthouse & then wait for the 10am 'real' start.
If you want to put in extra miles at a reasonable pace, just ride to the start.
Incidently, I've talked a bunch of n00bies from work into doing this ride. Not sure what kind of pace they'll sustain (if any) but I'll be happy to meet up with people at the start.

I did not register yet because I don't know where I want to start from. Reading the webite directions, it seems to me that the courthouse is easier to get to if coming from Brooklyn by train. Those directions to Riverdale had my head spinning.
Yeah, me too. If you want you can meet us here and we'll all go up butt crack early - think of it as a day riding and you'll be able to brag about the 60 miles the next day :D

I rode up last year from Brooklyn and it didn't take that long. I don't think it is even as far as the GWB.

Probably 6 ish or so if I had to guess. I figure an hour and a half to get up there, check in at 8:15, little bit of leeway.

Never mind..i just answered my own question. It's less than 3 miles biking. I'll probably leave my car at the Botanical Gardens and ride to the start at the courthouse.
So who do we have riding from Brooklyn? Last year I did this and we picked up some Manhattan people in Central Park at 90th Street, I believe.

I can meet up with peeps at 90th & CP (Engineer's Gate) and ride up from there.
Sounds good, Lucky. How long do you think we need to get from Engineer's Gate to the County Building? We should be at the starting line by 9:30ish -- give ourselves some time to register and all.

I think it's about 4 miles or so from CP to the Bronx Courthouse. Probably need 30-40 minutes depending on the riders/traffic/lateness etc.
By bike from Central Park:
Exit from north end of park at 7th Avenue (Adam Clayton Powell Blvd.). Ride up A.C. Powell Blvd to E. 145th Street. Turn right, and continue across bridge into the Bronx. Take 2nd left onto Gerard Aveue, continue to E.161st street. Take a right and go two blocks to Grand Concourse.

If there's going to be a group at the Engineer's Gate (that's on the East Side, right?), I'm in. It would be great to have some company for the ride to the start. Sounds like you guys are thinking of meeting there (CP and 90th) between 8:45 and 9:00?
8:45, 9ish sounds good. And the Brooklyn contingent can meet at Grand Army Plaza? Say around 8 am? That should give us plenty of time, don't you think?
I'm doing the 40 miler, prolly with a few folks who don't go cycling too much, but they're in shape at least. Starting from Astoria. Did it last year, had a blast. The line for the loo at the first rest stop was unbelievable though... this year I'm not going to load up on the coffee so early.

I'll also be starting from Riverdale, since I live nearby. I didn't register yet, because I'm waiting for my friend to decide whether he wants to do the 25 or 40 mile ride. Personally, my preference is 40.
BTW, anyone from Brooklyn/Manhattan who wants to start in Riverdale can take the Metro-North Hudson line and ride to the start.
