Tandem Cycling - Used Tandem

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hey guys,
I'm in Oklahoma City and looking for a tandem. I could pick it up from a neighboring state if needed, or pay some shipping. I am looking for something a little less expensive, but I am more than willing to make as many repairs as necessary, I just need a something that will eventually ride. Any help you guys could give me would be great.
Thanks

Mike, I think we might need to be thrown a few more bones to be able to help.
1. What type of riding are you looking to do (on road, off road, casual, competitive etc.)
2. What is your budget ("a little less expensive" means different things to different people)
3. Size - what is the approx size of yourself and your potential Stoker/Captain
4. I am assuming you have not ridden a tandem before, but currently ride a single?
I probably won't be able to offer much advice since I am in a different country, but the above basic questions will help out anyone trying to respond

I have only ridden on one once, but I got hooked. I would want something on road, and preferably steel. the most I could spend would be 150. I'm about 5" 11' and my girlfriend is 5' 10". I don't need anything competitive, but something that could make it 14 or 20 miles after some maintenance i needed. I do normally ride road bikes. Thanks

I have to admit, you probably aren't going to get much for $150
keeping an eye on craigslist or ebay would be your best bet.
this Vintage Schwinn (http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Schwinn-tandem-bike-bicycle-60s-very-original_W0QQitemZ190154029489QQihZ009QQcategoryZ95155QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphot ohosting)one is finishing in 15 hrs
Could be a bit of fun and looks like it is only 2 states away :-)
There are also a few around $250 that look ok (this Trek T900 (http://cgi.ebay.com/Trek-T-900-Tandem-Bike-Truvativ-Deore_W0QQitemZ140159344713QQihZ004QQcategoryZ56192QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)for instance - this is a "one size fits all" bike, but your sizes should fit within the adjustable range)

Check out local yard sales for something in that price range. Shipping a tandem any distance (new or used) will cost over 100 bucks.

There are deals out there. You just have to be patient.I find the more you want something the more you'll end up paying. Here's my tandem,it's a 1971 CCM that I got for nothing. It was missing just about everything. All I got was the frame and chainguard.I ended up finding another one that was in poor shape for $50.The bottom tube of the frame had a 6" crack in it(had quite the bend)and mismatched wheels(mtn bike on the front and some totally destroyed single speed wheel on the back)and it was missing both fenders.I took the front handlebars, rear handlebar/seat post, chainrings, and chains.I then bought a 1971 Free Spirit ladies bike(equipped with Sturmey Archer AW hub)for$20.I stripped the fenders, cables front fork and wheels. So for a grand total of $70 I have a solidly built tandem that gets lots of use.
