Hello all,

I haven't biked in a few years and I'm looking to get back into it. I primarily ride the local bike trails, which are either paved or crushed limestone. I went to the LBS yesterday to look at new bikes, and they had a couple 2002 Gary Fisher Fast City models that they say are new, not used. I'm a bit leery of buying a 'new' bike that is a model year 2002. On the other hand, I rode the bike and liked it. The bike shop is asking $750 for it. Does anyone have any comments/recommendations regarding this bike in particular, or in general regarding buying a 'new' 2002?

I can't speak about this bike specifically, but I would have no problem buying a new bike that's last year's model if it was something that I liked, wanted, and had a reasonable price. I believe the current GFFC goes for about $1000 so the "discount" seems reasonable IF YOU LIKE THE BIKE.

Just my 2¢ worth,
Mel

I've ridden Gary Fisher bikes for the past five years now and I am thoroughly partisan. Indeed, I've recently purchased a new Utopia. Not only great bikes, but my local Fisher dealer is far more responsive and supportive than any other shop I've ever dealt with. There is minimal difference between the 2002 and 2003 Fast City - to compare, please see:

The list price is $1099.99; even taking the year into consideration, $750 is an excellent buy. The Fast City is a superlative all-around go-anywhere bike, beautifully designed and well-built using quality components. Ultimately, as Mel strongly suggests above, "if you like the bike," don't hesitate.
