google is your friend, and is much more likely to yield credible sources

1 in 2 people* believe it's better to have sources you can actually cite and not just quote random drivel from forum members.

(Well, I asked the plant in the room I'm in and got no response so I assumed that was a No with respect to citing the sources)

Sure

such as how popular it is

It is a very popular sport for upper middle class white males ages 14-58. 24% more popular than freestyle walking (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qetvV4JUDc) and 45% more popular than competitive eating (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgqbCq_sxmo).

Here's a little known fact. Most mountain biking is done with a mountain bike. There is a small group (really only 1 individual) that ride with friends WITHOUT a mountain bike but I think he might be waiting for his credit card rewards to accumulate. I have witnessed this on television so you can be assured it is true.

But there a lot of people who ride a mountain bike without mountains.

ok, Im not stupid, but I need some facts about mountain biking. Ive only found one useful peice of advice on here. anyway, popularity meant how many people do it, especially compared to skateboarding, in Canada would be the most helpful.

I'll have to agree with others - Google is your best bet. Data accumulated for the US can be interpolated to Canada reasonably well, but if you're using this for a paper, simply dividing the numbers by 10 might not fly. You can also try Statistics Canada, or the bike industry site [name of site and/or association escapes me]. Check with your provincial bicycle association. I'm sure they will have some links, or they can put you in touch with the right person to help you out. Search your local university library for Masters/PhD theses on the subject. You might not be able to use them directly, but you can use their sources.

Good luck!

Edit: Since I have researched this in the past, I'll throw out some factoids [note that you will need to verify this data and find your own sources]:
- ~80% of all adult bicycles sold in Canada are classified as mountain bikes [a opposed to BMX, Road, Hybrid, Unicycle, etc.]
- Only ~20% of all adult mountain bikes sold in Canada are ever taken off-road [in the US, it's ~10%]
- mountain bike use is higher in the Western provinces than in the rest of Canada
- IIIRC, skateboarding has a very different demographic than mountain biking, with over 90% of active participants under the age of 18
Again, you'll need to verify any factoid you might read on a forum. You might want to poke your head into the advocacy forum and ask around. You'll likely get a better response.

Fact 1: about mountain biking that I can assure you is true. While not the most versed or greatest mountain biker currently living, junkyard is at the top of the list when it comes to most sarcastic mountain bikers perusing bike forums. I am quite sure that the others sharing the top slots on the list with me are comfortable in knowing who they are.

Fact B: Green mountain bikes get the most *****.

I can't confirm or deny "Fact B", but "Fact 1" I can vouch for.

No worries, I'm all over Fact B.

And, Fact III would be that oatmeal is a mountain biker's best friend.

Sounds like a school project. I did two kids' homework already and I've paid my dues. Do your own homework :)

Mtb is first, since skateboarding is declining:

Mtb also wins in this:

...but not in Canada:
