This has probably been mentioned before but I couldn't see it in the search...

Saw a pair of bikes parked up in town with 'Think before you Drive' on the top-tube in bright red, made by a company called KIA. Looked KIA up on the web and they're apparantly a car manufacturer... odd...

'tis quite odd actually, you would think that car manufacturers would be promoting driving in a different manner. Kia is a Korean company afaik, making rubbish vehicles. Obviously those who buy them dont think before driving.

The Kia is quite popular here with the younger crowd looking for an inexpensive new car. I must admit some of them look pretty snappy too, with a ten year 100,000 mile warrentee.

Not sure if it is the same company thoguh.

It is the same company:

UK car manufacturer, KIA, has become the first motor company to acknowledge the need to change attitudes to car use by launching its environmental and social campaign, ‘Think Before You Drive’.

The campaign is designed to encourage individual responsibility for driving patterns, and to promote integrated transport solutions that reduce dependence on motoring. The project involves four practical activities, which, it hopes, will start to change attitudes amongst industry, consumers and the media.

I remember phoning Kia Australia about this when I was in the market for a new car. Apparently this campaign was only being offered in thr e UK.

I recall they included a bike with the purchase of a car as well (ah yes... "KIA is offering a hybrid mountain bike as standard with every KIA Sedona sold". These were probably the bikes Richard saw.

PS. Isn't Kia actually a Korean company?

I have a much maligned 1998 Kia Sephia, the one everyone says is crap, and it is still running quite well with over 95,000 miles. It's kind of nice to buy a car from a country that has been on our side of wars.

Those KIA cars are crap, the 10k warranty is powertrain, most car brands offer powertrain warranties up there. They have no resale value at all. Once you buy it there is no getting rid of it. Koreans make crap stuff, everything is made flimsy and for as little money as possible. They think money and then safety. Not to say they all dont but kia is worse. They are a waste of money. For the little you save when you buy it you will lose it in the long run. Might as well but a freaking Deawoo!

Thanks for that most "enlightened" opinion djb, tell us what you really think?

1. Most other car manufactures do not have a ten year power train warranty.

2. Relative to the initial cost, the resale value remains on par with other cars in that category.

3. Every major car company makes "crap stuff" and thinks about the bottom line first, and then safety.

4. All cars must meet federal standards to be sold in th U.S.

5. Not everyone can afford an expensive car, the KIA obviously has a reputation for being cheap and appeals to the younger driver.

6. Relax, it is just an entry level car that competes with the Corolla, Sentra, and Civic. It is what it is and folks buy them for many reasons but namely cost.

Did you get burned on a KIA thinking it was the next Saab, it sounds like it (smile) ?

1. He didnt say 10 years, he said 10k, meaning 10,000km.
2. Absolute rubbish, Kia's have a tiny resale value compared to something like a Corolla or Focus.
3. Rubbish again, Ford, Toyota, Mitsubishi all make cars with safety in mind before 'the bottom line'.
4. Yes, they must meet the standards but there is a difference between meeting the standard and exceeding it.
5. This is correct, but this has nothing to with djbowen1's statement. They are still a crap vehicle.
6. It doesnt compete with Corolla, Sentra and Civic on reliability and resale, just price. Yes, its enrty level, about as entry level as they come.

kthxbye.
