5 weeks ago, I broke my fibula in a MTB crash. I had surgery and had a Ti plate and six screws installed in my leg. 3 weeks and 5 days later I was riding my road bike again. 5 weeks and 2 days later, I took my 1st MTB ride back.
LBL was having a 12 hours of LBL on Sept 22 and I wrenched for both of our MTB teams. The 2 man duo and the 4 man. Our 2 man duo team took 1st place and our 4 man team took 5th and was off the podium by just 3 minutes!
While I was scheduled to ride this event, the guys didn't think 5 weeks was enough recovery to come back and race so I got a replacement rider to take my spot while I wrenched. I rode some of the trail on Saturday really easy to just make sure shocks and forks were set right. I did bolt checks, fixed bikes during the race and test rode them on other sections.
All this was driving me crazy so I talked it over with my GF and we decided we would stay 1 more day and let me ride 6.5 miles of the 11 mile XC race trail.
I got up the next day, had breakfast and we ventured over to the start point of the previous day's race and rode back to the North Welcome station on the Lake Barkley side. My girlfriend asked me how long it would take me to ride it and I told her that it would take me about 30 minutes in race shape and probably 35-40 minutes since it was my first ride back. I kissed her by and took off.
While my lungs hurt after about 3 miles they settled down by the 4 mile mark, my leg felt strong and so did the rest of my body. I had just installed a fox F100RLC on my race bike and my friend Ryan had raced it the previous day in the 4 man team. The bike felt planted, I was cutting a good line and felt stronger on the bike than I had on any of my road rides the previous week. I saw the turn to get out of the trail where my GF was there with camera waiting to take a picture of me on my first ride back.
I gave her a hug and she asked my time....I looked down and the computer said 30:20. Felt good to see that time and had I continued it would have been a sub 1 hour lap. To put things in perspective, our fastest ride burned a 54 minute loop during the race and he was one of the fastest riders on the course.
Before my injury, I had done a training ride at 57:40 and felt that would have been my time during the race. Feels good to be back! Hoping I can compete in the sports class in October. It's a 31 mile race at LBL on the North/South trail.
The leg feels like it is getting stronger EVERY day. Still swells some but looks like the doctor did a great job fixing the leg and all those calcium suppliments seem to have paid off.
I probably could have pushed harder but I know I was somewhat tenative but it was nice to push the big ring in the front like I had previously on that section of the trail. I guess it will be that first crash, get up and make sure everything is ok before I will be totally confident again on the trail.
